This Refugee Week, we celebrate courage — the courage to leave behind everything familiar, to overcome uncertainty, and to build a new life in a new place.

At Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees, we are inspired by the strength, resilience, and determination of the individuals and families we support. Their stories remind us that courage takes many forms, and that a welcoming community can make all the difference. This week, we will be reflecting on these stories.

For more information on this year's theme, 'Courage' and the roots of Refugee Week, see https://refugeeweek.org/theme-refugee-week-2026-courage/

Together, let's recognise the courage of refugees and continue building a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and able to thrive.

On Saturday 20 June — World Refugee Day — Sevenoaks will come together for something entirely new: our very first Refugee Walk.

This inaugural event, a joint initiative of Sevenoaks Town Council and Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees, will trace eight sites across the town where the long, remarkable history of offering refuge can still be seen and felt today. From the Huguenots of the 18th century to the arrival of Belgian refugees at Sevenoaks Railway Station in 1914, welcome is written into the landscape of our own town. Community lies at the heart of building a Town of Sanctuary—shaping our past, enriching our present, and inspiring our future.

Date: Saturday 20 June 2026 — World Refugee Day
Time: 9:30am–12:00pm
Meeting point: The Flagpole, The Vine, Sevenoaks
Distance: Approximately 4 miles
Duration: Approximately 2.5–3 hours

The morning will begin at The Vine at 9.30am, where the Town of Sanctuary flag will be raised — a fitting and moving way to open the day. This is the first year of what we hope will become a cherished annual tradition, and we would love as many people as possible to join us. It’s free — but please sign up and if you can, a donation to SWR would be deeply appreciated. Sign up here: https://www.zeffy.com/en-GB/ticketing/the-sevenoaks-refugee-walk

A huge thank you to Sevenoaks Town Council for providing us with a stand at the Sevenoaks Business Show🙌

Our main goal was to raise awareness of Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees within the local business community, exploring opportunities for traineeships and employment for our refugees, while promoting our fundraising efforts. We are grateful to have made a number of valuable new connections which we will be following up in the coming weeks.

We were delighted to have several of our Ukrainian refugees volunteering at the entrance, warmly welcoming visitors, assisting with registration, and handing out show bags. Their kindness and energy helped set such a positive tone for the day⭐️

At our stand, we proudly showcased the incredible talents and craftsmanship of our Afghan, Syrian, and Ukrainian refugees. From handmade leather boots and toys to beautifully crafted clothing, the creativity and skill on display were truly inspiring. We were also delighted to feature a Syrian cookbook written by one of the first Syrian refugees we supported.

We were especially pleased that one local refugee was offered a job opportunity as a direct result of the event. A very big thank you goes to all the volunteers and refugees who supported us on the day and to everyone who visited our stand, taking the time to learn more about our work🧡💙.

Finally, our heartfelt thanks go to Mile Reid at the Town Team for his outstanding organisation of this annual event. His hard work and dedication makes the Sevenoaks Business Show such a valuable occasion for local organisations and businesses alike.

Huge thank you to Sevenoaks District Council for organising First Aid Courses which many of our volunteers and refugees attended!🤩

We also met volunteers from other different local charities. It was a very informative and well run course. Everyone enjoyed the training and at the end felt more confident about providing first aid in the event of an emergency. First Aid is a very important life skill and helps towards creating a safer community. Once again thank you to SDC and especially Megan Glen Community Mobilisation and Engagement Officer for organising!💙🧡

This Volunteer Week, we want to say thank you.

SWR is, quite simply, its volunteers. You are the people who show up — week after week — to teach, drive, support, fundraise, write, organise, and listen. You give your time, your skills, and your care to families who are building new lives in our community, and you do it with generosity and good humour.

Behind every family that finds their footing here, there are neighbours who chose to get involved. That's you.

From across the Sevenoaks district that make up our network, to every conversation and every cup of tea along the way — thank you for being part of this.

We are proud to walk alongside you.
