FSC Malham Tarn

FSC Malham Tarn A residential field centre, based in the outstanding Yorkshire Dales offering a beautiful location f

This Centre, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, occupies a large Georgian country house, leased from the National Trust. Malham Tarn is an unusual lime-rich upland lake, set amid a variety of habitats with a range of nationally-scarce species. To the west of the Tarn is an area of fen and raised bog, while the surrounding grassland has areas of limestone pavement and a rich flora. The woodland

around Tarn House is also of conservation importance. The Tarn and its associated wetlands and woodlands form a National Nature Reserve. The reserve is part of the much larger Malham-Arncliffe Site of Special Scientific Interest. The area's importance in an international context is recognised by its designation as a RAMSAR site and as a Special Area of Conservation. The National Trust manages the reserve in partnership with Natural England and the Field Studies Council.

It was with the very deepest regret that we heard of the death of Her Majesty the Queen. Her commitment has been an inspiration to us all throughout the period of her reign. She will be remembered for dedicating her life to the service of our nation. In particular, we pay tribute to her commitment to the creation of woodland canopies here in the UK and across the commonwealth.

We offer our condolences to our Patron, His Majesty the King and all members of the Royal Family at this sad time.

They have arrived! The Ladyโ€™s Slipper Orchids (Cypripedium calceolus) are in bloom!

With stories of bundles of these orchids being sold at Settle and Skipton market... their populations then diminished in the Victorian times by orchid collectors ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

But luckily there are a few natural populations and some like these which were propagated by Kew gardens and The National Trust!

They are cold hardy and calcium loving orchids and one of the largest and rarest in the UK! How lucky are we!? ๐Ÿ˜

This weeks is the beautiful Whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus)! ๐Ÿฆข

These wonderful birds stopped at the tarn this weekend on their migration back to Iceland! ๐Ÿงญ

They typically visit and breed in upland lakes, feeding on reeds and vegetation. In Iceland some of their feeding grounds contain high amounts of iron which stain their feathers a coppery colour ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ธ
