HELP US TO HELP OLDER PEOPLE
You will be familiar with the façade of our Age UK shop on Cheapside in the centre of Settle.
Maybe you have been inside to drop off a donation for us to sell; maybe you have bought a book, a lampshade or a shirt while you were there. If you have, thank you.
Where does the money go?
Many people assume that the money we raise goes straight to the national AgeUK charity who give some of it back to us. Wrong! All the income we generate stays here in North Craven. Of course we pay rental for the shop, salaries for staff and the usual utilities. After that, everything raised is used to pay for the services we offer to older people in North craven. We use the AgeUK brand name and are associated with them but remain a proud local charity.
What did we do in 2025/6?
We have supported over 2,000 older people directly and additionally provided advice as a result of concerned calls from carers, family members, friends and neighbours of older people.
Our Information and Advice team helped over 800 people claim benefits to which they were entitled. This amounted to £258,400 in total, which is a substantial sum in an area where North Yorkshire County Council acknowledges that benefits are under-claimed. Additionally, 80 disabled people have been helped to obtain blue badges, and general advice has been given about care and support, housing and energy matters. Much of this has been done in our 22 out-reach sessions, enabling us to meet people unable to come into our Cheapside offices.
We have tried to combat loneliness and isolation by arranging mini-bus trips to, for example, Harrogate and Morecambe. Our minibus has also run some 98 shuttles, taking older people shopping in Settle, Kendal, Skipton and Kirkby Lonsdale, and our community transport has helped 740 people attend medical appointments.
We also aim to provide fun! Over 150 people attended our coffee mornings, lunch clubs, sports groups, bingo and dancing, and have helped out on our allotment.
None of this would have been possible without a dedicated group of 120 volunteers who give generously of their time, good humour and expertise.
What of the future?
We are here to help older people in Settle and throughout North Craven. We care, we understand and we want to help. But we cannot do this without your support.
We, like everyone, are facing challenging times. Our outgoings have increased while our income is struggling to keep up. We have had to make cutbacks. Many of our social groups have become self-supporting and some have closed. We have had to let go of staff and cannot, for example, offer a befriending service that was greatly appreciated in the past. We will be closing our Second Time Around shop when the lease ends in September and concentrating our donations and sales on our Cheapside shop.
Please help us to help older people stay happy, healthy and in their own homes. You could do this in many ways:
• Offer to volunteer with us. There are lots of roles you might like, from becoming a trustee to sorting donated goods. Volunteering is a fun way to meet new people while at the same time supporting the work we do for older people. Please ring us on 01729 823066 if you can help..
• Donate clothes, bric-a-brac and almost anything else to our Cheapside shop.
• Make our Cheapside shop your first stop shop for that book you need to read on holiday, the clothes you need to supplement your wardrobe and for that elusive birthday present.
• Support us financially, either directly or by leaving a legacy in your will. You can make a cash donation in the shop or on our website (www.ageuk.org.uk/northcraven) where you will be given the opportunity to make a one-off or a regular cash donation.
We will be grateful for whatever you can do to help us to continue to grow and develop our support for older people in our community.
