Developing the Young Workforce - Borders

On a beautiful sunny day in the Borders, S2 pupils from Kelso High School visited Floors Estate to take part in a DYW Career Insight Day with Roxburghe Estates.

Throughout the day groups visited 7 stations across the Estate, each focussing on different careers in the rural sector - Gardening, Gamekeeping, Forestry, Stonemasonry, Joinery, Farming and Tourism.

A fantastic day of learning and insight with the added bonus of some former KHS pupils sharing their career journeys with the future young workforce.

Our Higher and National PE students were delighted to welcome Brad Fullarton from Ambition Sport Psychology, who made the journey from Glasgow to Jedburgh to provide an insight into the world of sport psychology.

Brad shared his 8-year journey to becoming a sport psychologist, discussed his current role with Scottish Bowling, and spoke about his involvement with their Commonwealth Games team.
Students also had the opportunity to practise active listening, one of the key skills used by sport psychologists, and gained valuable strategies for managing mental and emotional factors during performance.
As understanding mental and emotional factors is an important part of the Higher and National PE courses, the session provided excellent real-world context to support students' coursework and learning.

Fantastic to welcome almost 20 businesses from a range of sectors to our recent 'Connect Your Business to Our Classroom' event for Gala Academy and Earlston High School! 🙌

Businesses were introduced to DYW Borders and the role employers can play in helping young people connect with the world of work. Together, we took part in themed workshops explored the changing school curriculum and new qualifications, discussed simple but impactful ways to engage with schools, and shared the key skills employers want to see in the future workforce.

From mentoring and mock interviews to workplace visits and classroom based workshops — every bit of employer involvement makes a difference, whether it’s 1 hour a year or 4 hours a month.

A big thank you to Skills Development Scotland for sharing valuable career destination data and insights into the pathways school leavers from Earlston and Gala are progressing into after leaving school.

The conversations were insightful, collaborative, and full of ideas for strengthening connections between schools and local businesses.

Inspiring the next generation 🔧✨

Earlston HS S3 Engineering Skills class had a visit to three engineering firms in Tweedbank—getting a real insight into the innovation happening right on their doorstep. From precision manufacturing to hands-on technical training, students discovered just how diverse and exciting a career in engineering can be.

The aim? To open eyes to the opportunities available locally and showcase the wide range of pathways - there’s so much more than you might think.

👀 Paid Content Creation role at the Borders Book Festival 2026.

Do you know a young person who is always on their phone making videos and could edit content in their sleep?

Bloom Media is hiring a Social Media Production Assistant for Borders Book Festival this June. We're looking for someone under 30 who loves creating content for TikTok, Instagram, or similar platforms and has a good eye for editing.

Editing is at the heart of this role. They'll be turning around authentic content, for a real audience, at speed, across five days of live festival programming. Alongside that, they'll be working as part of a professional team with young people on the Bloom Media programme, helping them to tell their festival stories on camera.

This is not work experience. It's a paid, professional role designed to give an emerging content creator a platform, a portfolio, and access to an environment that might otherwise take years to reach. They'll also receive plenty of learning opportunities and support from a highly experienced team throughout.

They don't need a long CV. They just need to know their way around short-form editing apps, work well with people, and be ready to go.

£625 fee. Five days. Closing date Sunday 3 May 2026.
