Creative Coathanger

Creative Coathanger Creative Coathanger is a new concept which will showcase creativity in the Scottish Borders. www.creativecoathanger.org

The region has a rich creative history and thriving contemporary community of artists, craft makers, musicians, poets, sculptors, designers, architects etc. This includes the world renowned fashion and textile design school at Heriot-Watt University in Galashiels, and some of the world’s most famous textile mills. Creative Coathanger Galashiels is a festival of everything creative. Events will cov

er a broad range of activities:

3D arts like sculpture and carving, buildings, outdoor space and public art
2D arts like painting, drawing, photography, printing, design and books
Makers, doers and performers, including fashion, film, music and interactive
We are also hoping to make the Galashiels town centre unrecognsiable for the weekend, and will be inviting all shops and businesses to get involved in the event. We want to see empty shops and outdoor spaces turned into space for artists, designers and makers to exhibit, host pop-up studios and art installations, makers demonstrations and markets. The festival runs from Saturday 24th September to Sunday 9th October 2016. There will be a concentration of activities during the first weekend in October (Friday 30th September – Sunday 2nd October) but we hope to get lots of events happening in the weeks either side. Most events will be taking place in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, with some events being held in the neighbouring towns of Selkirk and Hawick. Galashiels is 33 miles south of Edinburgh and 74 miles north of Newcastle.

Glass engraving, collage and (last minute) Cyanotype printing

What a great community. Amazing what you all achieved in an hour… and just a taste of what could be possible if Creative Coathanger formed a creative hub in the Municipal Building

Never heard of Cyanotype? It’s an old printing style involving just iron chemical and sunlight

A chance to learn how Sara makes her beautiful jewellery at Selkirk Making Festival

Wax carving is the first process in creating a piece of jewellery, prior to casting in a precious metal. You will learn how to use special wax to shape a ring or pendant with cutting and heat tools.

Sara creates contemporary bespoke pieces, using the Japanese process of wax sculpting and the ancient process of sand casting
