ONE WEEK TODAY! One of the UK's leading outdoor arts festivals is coming to Tadcaster Barn , and it's completely free.
Freedom Festival Hull , Hull's famous international arts festival, is bringing a day of world-class performances to Tadcaster Barn in collaboration with the Now Then programme.
Expect an afternoon of circus, dance, theatre and interactive family experiences, including:
• Acrobot – a circus performer and his self-built robot star in a funny, thought-provoking show.
• LILLIPUT, Fairy Tales – a magical, interactive world where families can step inside much-loved fairy tales.
• OTEMPODIZ – a powerful contemporary dance performance exploring our relationship with time.
• SENESCENCE – a breathtaking circus performance featuring a giant moving steel sculpture and extraordinary feats of balance, strength and endurance.
It's one of the last opportunities to enjoy a free family day out before the new school term begins.

After the international success of Frock, Stopgap Dance Company return with their latest outdoor show RO-TES រទេះ. Disabled artist Nadenh Poan makes his choreographic debut in collaboration with Stopgap’s diverse and world class dancers.

Nadenh grew up on a boat within the jungle of Cambodia. As a Disabled child he could swim before he could wheel. The first time he saw a RO-TES រទេះ (Khmer for wagon) was the moment he realised he could move with the land too.

Inspired by his heritage, Nadenh reimagines his wheelchair as a place that can support more than just his body.

With groundbreaking innovation in wheelchair design, the diverse creatives of Stopgap invent a new world of bold movement and irresistible rhythms. Audiences are invited to revel and follow this joyful celebration that represents progress, community, and Nadenh’s journey with his RO-TES រទេះ.

Expect a celebration that will surprise and delight audiences of all ages.

There is also a Touch Tour preceding each performance, and Audio Description embedded in the soundtrack.

On Thursday 3 September OTEMPODIZ from ertza is coming to Tadcaster Barn so what's it about?

In the west it is said that time is counted, measured, bought, sold, planned, and organized. It is an objective thing, independent from people, which we use to do things, but of which we are almost always short.

In turn, in Africa time is something people live; they have it, or make it. It is a subjective thing inherent to people; something they inhabit, and is hardly ever in shortage.

“You have the watches, but we have the time.” There are many ways to experience time, including being a slave to it; but what cannot be denied is the power that dance gives us to experience time in the absolute present.

This is a 25 minute dance show that you'll be able to see as part of Tadcaster Creates and Freedom Festival Hull for FREE! One of five performances to see on the day. Just turn up!

Some exciting news! Selby's very own Art is my Career C.I.C has created a Creative Careers CPD programme worth four CPD points, giving teachers and educators an insight into the Creative Sector. Designed to be done in a time that suits you, the CPD Programme offers four CPD points on completion, certified by the CPD Standards Board.

Split into four sections the programme covers;

- A greater understanding of the creative sector
- Knowledge on the range of opportunities within the creative sector
- How the sector is progressing and future predictions
- How you can implement opportunities into daily conversations with young people.

A physical or digital workbook can be downloaded or sent out for completion during the programme, this will act as your proof of completion for your CPD certificate.

The CPD Standards Board described the programme as;

‘The careers content is genuinely useful. The sixteen groupings with detailed role lists give teachers a vocabulary they are unlikely to have, and the walk-through of the roles behind a magazine, a game and a theatre production is an effective way of showing how many careers sit behind a single familiar product.’

The FREE resource for educators everywhere is available to download at https://artismycareer.org/educators and is CPD accredited by the CPD Standards Board.

Tag anyone who works with young people, it's already proving very popular.

Creative Careers CPD is part of the Now Then! Programme, bringing free cultural and creative events and projects to Selby, Sherburn and Tadcaster. Funded by Arts Council England North Yorkshire Council and UKSPF.

We are so excited to see Lilliput – We Play Tales from Companyia Tombs Creatius at Tadcaster Barn on Thursday 3 September. Part of Freedom Festival Hull On Tour it's an immersive and interactive installation where children and families step inside the world of classic fairy tales.

Through playful challenges, sensory experiences and hands-on participation, audiences become the protagonists of well-known stories such as Sleeping Beauty, Tom Thumb, Cinderella and The Bremen Musicians. Blending theatre, play and imagination, Lilliput invites visitors to rediscover timeless tales in a unique way, where stories are not simply told, but explored, recreated and lived firsthand.

Totally FREE, this is going to be a wonderful way to end the school holidays, so come along!

We're delighted that work created with Imitating the dog as part of Selby Light 2026 will be on display tomorrow, at Up For Yorkshire 's Cultural Celebration Event,

A film by Selby resident, Nancy, will be on display at Brayton Community Centre on Tuesday 11th August, 11am–3pm.

The event is free and there will also be live entertainment, music, games, free face painting, a free bouncy castle and activities celebrating cultures from around the world, it's a fantastic day out for all ages.

Now Then! originally commissioned the work and it was made possible thanks to funding from Arts Council England, North Yorkshire Council and UKSPF.

Don't forget to save the date for Freedom Festival Hull on Tour coming to Tadcaster Barn on Thursday 3 September. One of the performances you can see is Acrobot!

Acrobot is a groundbreaking performance featuring a self-built robotic acrobat. Blending juggling, acrobatics, humor, and storytelling, the show explores the relationship between humans and technology in our post-digital society. Why would a circus performer build a robot? Can a robot be an artist? And what happens when your own creation begins to outshine you? Created and performed by Dutch interdisciplinary artist Daniel Simu, Acrobot combines over 15 years of circus experience with cutting-edge technological innovation. The result is a unique, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining performance that reimagines collaboration between man and machine.

We’re delighted to see Through the Liquid Crystal Display by Jazmin Morris featured on the cover of the Yorkshire Post.

The installation, returning after a successful debut at Selby Light, can be viewed during Selby Abbey opening times until 9 August. Do go and check it out!
