Today, we're celebrating Sardasht as part of our Volunteers Week special in our 50 stories for 50 years posts. Here's what he had to say about volunteering:
Where and what do you do as a volunteer?
"I volunteer by checking people’s blood pressure and helping promote health awareness in the community."
How much time do you spend doing this?
"I spend a few hours each week volunteering and helping people with blood pressure checks."
Why did you volunteer?
"I wanted to help people look after their health and make a positive difference in the community."
What do you get out of it?
"I enjoy helping others and learning more about healthcare while meeting different people."
What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
"I would say volunteering is a great experience because you can help others, learn new skills, and feel proud of making a difference."

Sardasht and all the volunteers we have shared this week are just a few of the fantastic people who make things happen by volunteering across Up for Yorkshire. A HUGE THANK YOU to all of them.

We are hearing from our Community Fridge Volunteer, Zoe, for our '50 stories for 50 years' Volunteers' Week special today. Zoe says: "I love helping to put smiles on people's faces and giving back to my community. Interacting with people is also good for my own mental health. Today, for our '50 stories for 50 years' Volunteers Week special, we are chatting to Anne!

Where and what do you do as a volunteer?
"I work at Community House doing admin for the Community Transport scheme. Our drivers are an amazing team of people that work one to one with some very vulnerable people, often at a difficult time in their lives. It is not just driving skills they need but also listening and communicating. They are an exceptional group of people , whom I am totally in awe of."

How much time do you spend doing this?
"On average a day and a half a week."

What do you get out of it?
"Something completely different to my usual work, meeting lots of different people, realising I have transferable skills. Learning new skills such as Power Point. Most of all making a difference to people who are vulnerable. Although I'm not on the frontline, like the drivers are, I believe we make some peoples’ lives do-able. Whether it’s getting a client to that scary hospital appointment and home again, getting a client to the dementia bus so her husband can have some time or going shopping or to the hairdressers. It’s a huge thing to the people we help. That feels good to me.
It also makes me aware of the macro picture. This has resulted in emailing and meeting with our M.P Keir Mather and attending a Yorkshire Community Transport event. There is so much that can be done to improve what we do and reach more people."

What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
"Do it! There are multiple roles, so somewhere there will be a fit for you."

⭐️A huge thanks to Anne for sharing her experience. If you’d like to be a volunteer driver on our Community Transport team, we always need more. Call 01757 291111 or
e-mail: [email protected] to find out more.⭐️

This week, as it is National Volunteers Week, our ‘50 stories for 50 years’ will feature some of our fantastic volunteers’ stories. First up, say ‘hello’ to Mark! Mark dedicates three to four hours a week to Up for Yorkshire volunteering as IT Support.

Why did you volunteer?
“To get work experience mostly. I was invited to volunteer through the Rise/Action to Inclusion programme and now I am here to gain work experience as I have been out of work for a long time.”

What do you get out of it?
“All the job experience, working in a professional environment. I get the opportunity to build my own skills and knowledge that I can transfer to other things.”

What would you say to someone thinking of volunteering?
“I’d say go for it! Even though you’re not getting paid for it, you’re still getting experience and that counts. You’re getting experience, contacts, references… All of that is really valuable.”

If you’d like to volunteer with us or want more information on our Rise or employability programmes, please get in touch: [email protected]
