Fascinating May meeting with our speaker, Roger Britt, who is an expert in the Asian Hornet, and told us about the threat they pose to our own honey bees and other insects in the UK. The Asian Hornets are being blown and carried over from France and Spain, where they decimate pollinators vital for food production. If you spot a Asian Hornet, keep well away, as they have longer, more painful stings, but do report them via the Asian Hornet Watch App.

Last month, we hosted a webinar on the two resolutions that have been put forward for the Annual Meeting in June; Action on Women’s Homelessness and Accessible public toilet facilities to promote dignity, health, and social inclusion.

The webinar offers an excellent opportunity for members to hear from an expert speaker on each on the resolution topics and to learn more about each issue, before instructing delegates ahead of the virtual Annual Meeting.

The recording of the resolution webinar is now available for our members to watch, here: https://mywi.thewi.org.uk/public-affairs-and-campaigns/news-and-actions/resolution-webinar-recording-now-available

Members were thrilled to welcome Kate from Womens Aid North East Lincolnshire, to speak at our April meeting. Kate spoke with such passion about the support available to women, their families, and men who are victims of domestic abuse in our area. Kate talked about the network of Womens Refuges across the UK, and how staff and volunteers work tirelessly to keep women and their children safe from all forms of abuse.

Burton Upon Stather Womens Institute members have chosen to support this valuable work by donating items such as clothing, toiletries, towels, sanitary products and much more to help women who have to leave their homes in an emergency to save themselves, and often their children, from serious harm.

In April our members donated items to make up 12 individual emergency bags, and another huge bag of clothing and toiletries, which our member, Sandra, presented to Kate at the monthly meeting. Our members are committed to making up a further 12 bags in the next 3 months.

Our members have been enjoying the spring weather in March.

Our Social & Stroll group had a lovely stroll in Alkborough woods, followed by lunch at The Paddocks Tea Room , where a few extra members joined us.

Our monthly Walking Group were lucky with the beautiful sunshine on their walk around the South Ferriby area, lead by our walk leader, Deborah.

Come and join us at Burton upon Stather next meeting on Tuesday, 14th April, 7pm at Burton upon Stather Village Hall. New members always welcome.

We’re on the lookout for letters written by WI members!

Do you have a treasured letter from your mother or grandmother, or an important piece of history preserved by your WI committee? Whether it’s an emotional exchange with a friend or family member, an opinion piece for a local paper, or a statement of views to her MP, we’d like to see writing about the WI, from WI women, from 1915 to now.

If you have a letter you’d like to share, please email a clear photograph or scan to [email protected] with ‘LETTERS’ in the subject line. We’ll take it from there!

Some of our members enjoyed a beautiful wintery walk this morning, around our local area. We are so lucky to have all of this on our doorstep. As ever, many thanks for Deborah for motivating us to get out in the fresh air after the festive period.
