Behind every wildlife casualty is a team of people committed to giving that animal the best possible chance of recovery.

At CapesWildlifeRescue, we believe wildlife rehabilitation involves far more than providing food, warmth and shelter. It requires careful assessment, appropriate clinical care, close monitoring and an understanding of the individual needs of every animal in our care.

🩺 Clinical skills. Compassionate care. Veterinary support.

Our team works hard to provide a structured approach to wildlife rehabilitation, from initial assessment and ongoing observations to supportive nursing care and monitoring each patient’s progress.

We are also incredibly fortunate to have an on-site veterinary team, providing valuable veterinary expertise and support to our wildlife patients. Having veterinary input as part of our rescue’s approach helps us work towards appropriate, welfare-led decisions at every stage of rehabilitation.

Every member of our team plays an important role. From the people providing daily husbandry and monitoring to those delivering hands-on care, it is that collective effort that makes a difference to the animals who arrive at our door.

Wildlife rescue isn’t always easy. Recovery can take time, progress isn’t always straightforward, and sadly, not every story has the outcome we hope for. But every animal deserves to be treated with care, dignity and compassion.

💚 Our mission is simple: to give injured, sick and vulnerable wildlife the best possible chance of returning to the wild.

We’re proud of the dedication of our team, grateful for the expertise of our veterinary colleagues, and committed to continually developing the standard of care we provide.

If you’d like to follow our patients’ journeys, see the work that happens behind the scenes, and support our mission to help wildlife, we’d love to have you as part of our community.

Follow CapesWildlifeRescue, share our work, and help us give wildlife a voice.

⚠️ Please DO NOT drop animals off at the rescue without prior authorisation. Wildlife casualties MUST undergo an initial triage prior to admission. This will not be tolerated. Anyone who turns up with an animal that has not had authorisation by one of the team, will be turned away. ⚠️

We are currently at FULL CAPACITY. We have reached the limits of the appropriate accommodation and resources available to us. Accepting additional animals without suitable facilities in place risks compromising the welfare of the new arrivals and the animals already in our care.

We will not compromise animal welfare by exceeding our safe capacity or placing animals in inappropriate accommodation simply to accommodate an unauthorised admission.

If you find a casualty, please contact us BEFORE travelling. If the animal requires urgent veterinary treatment, do not delay seeking appropriate help while waiting for a response.

Please respect our capacity, our team and the procedures we have established. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Our tawny owl has moved into his new aviary today and is currently taking some time to get his bearings and familiarise himself with his surroundings.

This little one came in a couple of weeks ago, after having been found at the side of the road, likely following some form of trauma. After veterinary assessment, he is on the mend! ❤️‍🩹

He has a nest box available, along with plenty of suitable perching options, but for now he’s decided that the floor is the best place to sit! 😂

It’s perfectly normal for wildlife to take a little time to explore and settle into a new environment, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on him as he gets comfortable in his new surroundings.

He’ll have plenty of time to choose where he feels most comfortable, we’re certainly not going to tell him where to sit! 🦉

🐭🌾 Little faces, tiny paws, and a whole lot of character!

Just look at this little one tucked away amongst the cosy bedding! 🥹

These little guys might be small, but they play an important role in our ecosystem. They help disperse seeds, provide food for native predators, and are a valuable part of our local wildlife.

At CapesWildlifeRescue, even our tiniest patients deserve the same care, attention and compassion as every other animal that comes through our doors. 🐾

It’s easy to overlook the little things in wildlife rescue, but every life matters, no matter how small. 💚

🦊 FOX RESCUED FROM FOOTBALL NETTING

We received a call from a teacher at The St Lawrence Academy after a fox was discovered badly tangled in a football net.

Myself, Madeleine and Debbie headed out to assess the situation, and it was immediately clear that this poor fox had become seriously caught up in the netting. 🥺

The netting was wrapped around his body and legs, so we carefully worked to free him, cutting the netting away piece by piece while taking care not to cause any further injury.

Once he was completely free, we carried out an assessment for any obvious injuries. Thankfully, despite how badly tangled he had been, we couldn’t identify any injuries. ❤️

After making sure he was safely clear of the netting and giving him a moment to settle, he was released and quickly headed off, hopefully a little wiser about football nets! 🦊💨

A huge thank you to the teacher at St Lawrence Academy for spotting him and contacting us. Situations like this can be extremely dangerous for wildlife, and getting help quickly is so important.

⚠️ A reminder to schools, sports clubs and anyone with football goals:
Please ensure football nets are removed, raised or properly secured when the goals aren’t being used. Foxes, deer, hedgehogs and other wildlife can become caught in loose netting, sometimes with devastating consequences.

Thankfully, this story had a happy ending. 🧡

🌿 MEET OUR AREA LEADS! 🌿

As CapesWildlifeRescue continues to grow, so does our team! 🦔🐦🦉🐭

We’re really pleased to introduce our Area Leads! These are volunteers who have taken on additional responsibility for specific areas of the rescue and will help support our wider volunteer team.

Each lead has a particular area of knowledge and responsibility, helping to make sure our casualties receive the correct care, our procedures are followed, and our volunteers have someone they can turn to for guidance and support. 💚

Our Area Leads cover:

🦔 Hedgehogs Lead - Madeleine
🐦 Bird Lead - Debbie
🦉 Bird of Prey Lead - Jenny
🐭 Small Mammals Lead - Dayna

These roles are an important part of how we’re developing CapesWildlifeRescue. They’ll help with training, supporting volunteers, maintaining standards within their area and ensuring that any concerns or questions can be escalated appropriately.

Most importantly, they’re here to support the team, nobody is expected to know everything, and our leads are there to help volunteers learn, ask questions and build confidence. 🌱

A huge thank you to our leads for taking on these responsibilities and helping us continue to improve the standard of care we provide. ❤️

We’re incredibly proud of the team we’re building. 🐾

Another little hog joins us for some TLC 🦔

This little one was found out during daylight hours, which can be a sign that something isn’t quite right, so the finder did the right thing by getting in touch and bringing him to safety.

On admission, we found that he is underweight and in need of some extra support. He’s now safely with us, where we can monitor him closely, provide appropriate food and warmth, and give him the time he needs to build his strength back up. ❤️

For now, he’s settling in and getting some much needed rest. We’ll be keeping a close eye on his weight, appetite and general condition over the coming days.

A huge thank you to his finder for stopping to help him, without that intervention, this little guy could easily have gone unnoticed. 🥹

If you find a hedgehog out during the day, please don’t automatically assume it’s simply enjoying the sunshine. Healthy adult hedgehogs are generally nocturnal, and daytime activity can indicate that a hedgehog needs help, particularly if it is small, thin, lethargic, injured or behaving unusually.
