West Sutherland Fisheries Trust

West Sutherland Fisheries Trust West Sutherland Fisheries Trust - www.wsft.org.uk - is a charitable trust (Charity No. SC024426) protecting the fish, rivers and lochs of the area

West Sutherland Fisheries Trust (WSFT) is helping to protect and conserve all fish species - salmon, trout, stickleback and eels - in the area. Working with interested parties, including land owners, angling clubs and environmental groups, to protect and improve the rivers and lochs for all inhabitants. WSFT undertakes scientific monitoring programmes of the fish populations within the area, both

freshwater and estuarine. We also undertake full habitat surveys within the catchments. This enables us to provide advice and guidance to all relevant parties and to try and ensure that best practice is used for the ecology of the area. The Trust is involved in the monitoring and removal of Invasive Non-Native Species within the area. Current projects include the removal of Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed from different catchments and the monitoring of mink rafts within the area. Educating the next generation is also important to the WSFT and is undertaken through our involvement with the local schools and the Highland Council Ranger Service. Taking people out and teaching them about the ecology of the rivers, lochs and coast through hands-on projects and fun days.

The end of another successful smolt trapping season. No peak in numbers observed, but a steady stream throughout the sampling period. Many thanks to Colin, SCENE, for the use of the trap and to the Estate for their help with everything.

A very successful round of sweep netting - lovely fish, good weather and great craic. Still buzzing :)

I recently re-installed the mink monitoring raft in Caithness as part of the Scottish Mink Monitoring Initiative https://invasivespecies.scot/mink-control-project/what-we-do/

I take out the raft during the winter to avoid it becoming damaged by rising water levels.

If you believe you may have seen mink in north Caithness or north Sutherland please let the mink initiative know, or contact you local ranger.

This are getting busy now, with 2 smolt traps running, but great to see some lovely fish passing through. Good to get some decent weather as well - although less of the bitey things would be appreciated!

As the last one of the season, I'm going back in time. This was sent in by an angler but apologies as I can't remember who. A lovely photo, but can you identify the beat?
