Our weekly wander around Achamore Gardens Gigha has been so lovely recently, we have seen so many different species! From four species of butterfly: orange-tip, peacock, red admiral, and green-veined white; to toads and toad tadpoles - yippee; large red damselflies, males and females; common Dor beetles; and over 20 species of bird including blackcaps, warblers, cuckoos, and treecreepers! Fabulous!

Some more wonderful nesting magic. This lovely starling found the perfect place in a deadwood tree. A new observation from us, the first parent came to the nest with a lovely juicy worm, and then called and called and called until the second parent came along to enter the nest. They both hopped in together with their foraged goods, and then flew out together. This happened four times as we watched, some seriously good co-parenting! Also, look at that amazing iridescent plumage in the sunshine, if ever anyone said starlings are boring, they are sadly misinformed! Once again, observed from a far distance, with long zoom, if you happen to catch a glimpse of nesting activity or wildlife in general, please help us protect them by viewing from afar!

Path maintenance is now in full swing, and this year we have really noticed a change in the plant species that are now thriving in these areas. Many of our paths started out as bracken fields, but since knocking the bracken back every four weeks each year, heather, bilberry, and thicker carpets of bluebells are now colonising these areas! However, despite anyone's best efforts, it would be impossible to make 22km of path network manicured, and who wants that anyway, this is the countryside! You can expect to find beautiful views, historic sites, and stunning beaches on our path network, but you will also find brambles, wet and uneven ground, and the occasional bit of bracken. Enjoy Gigha's wild side!

Bluebells have to be a highlight of the calendar for sure! They are incredible this year, and can be seen on a number of our paths including Springbank, Woodend Wood (opposite the Fire Station), Dun Chibhich, and on the easy access path in Achamore Gardens Gigha . It's always such a beautiful treat!

Our volunteers were back in Achamore Gardens Gigha helping with more clearance from Storm Eowyn in January 2025. This may seem like a long time ago but the storm left us with an immense amount to clear and sort. It simply has not been possible to remove all debris from the site, so instead the volunteers created a mahoosive dead hedge in a historic part of the Gardens. This area next to the Summerhouse has been found on old maps to be a wood pasture, and it is unsurprising given the huge mature beech trees that once stood here. The team did a fantastic job, and not only has the dead hedge made things look a little tidier, it creates a great space and habitat for a number of creatures from small birds, to rodents and invertebrates. In other areas, volunteers were burning through some old Rh.ponticum removal stacks to bring light and a great view when entering the Gardens from the main drive. Thank you to everyone who came along - we will finish the job, and the Gardens will be back to glorious once again!

It's survey season! We are so excited to be getting back to our annual wildlife hunts!
Across the spring and summer seasons we will be undertaking weekly Shorewatches for Whale and Dolphin Conservation, butterfly transects for Butterfly Conservation Scotland, Achamore Gardens Gigha pond surveys, bat Sunset Surveys for the Bat Conservation Trust, and of course continuing with Wetland Bird Surveys and general bird records for BTO British Trust for Ornithology. This is one of, if not the best part of rangering in the summer!

We have had our annual bat walk! Due to weather conditions we just missed International Dark Sky Week, but nevertheless, the walk was lovely! We saw 2 species, common pipistrelle and soprano pipistrelle, using traditional heterodyne meters, and a plug-in detector on a mobile phone. We spotted approximately 14 bats throughout the walk. It does sound a little off putting going on a "bat walk" but we promise it is fascinating and hilarious, from the wet-slaps to the crazy ticking that comes through monitors, there is endless fun to be had! If you get the chance to join a bat walk this summer, we highly recommend it. Always a highlight of the calendar, thank you to those who joined us! It's always marvellous!

😍What a wonderful treat 😍
A local resident alerted us to some birds nesting in a hillside, upon investigating we found a group of beautiful sand martins, and rightly identified, nesting! How lovely! These guys have arrived from south of the Sahara to breed here, and are likely to head back to Africa early in the autumn.
These photos were taken from a long distance so as not to disturb them. If you also spot wonderful wildlife or nesting birds, please keep your distance and enjoy from a far. It's also best practice not to publicise nesting locations, so please forgive us for not revealing all, we want these guys and their chicks to survive and thrive!
