Briefing from Friends Of The Earth reference upcoming debate on Fracking... Contact Your MP on banning fracking -
On Tuesday 15 September, MPs could have an opportunity to debate the issue of a complete ban on fracking in Parliament. This is an important chance to build support for a clear legislative ban on this form of fossil fuel extraction.
Please note that, although this debate is provisionally scheduled for Tuesday 15 September, these debates are frequently postponed but its great to get your request into your MP at this stage.
We are urging MPs to support the inclusion of a complete ban on fracking in theforthcoming Energy Independence Bill.
For the Bill to result in this complete ban on fracking, it would need to:1. Close the loophole that currently permits applications for low-volume fracking and other fracking techniques like acid fracturing.
2. Bring in a permanent fracking ban in law, which would make it much stronger than the current moratorium.
3. Ensure this ban applies to areas covered by existing licences.
What can local groups do
Please contact your MP as soon as possible and ask them to:
Primary ask
• Attend the parliamentary debate on 15 September.
• Speak in favour of including a provision in the Energy Independence Bill to fully ban fracking.
Alternative ask If they are unable to attend or speak in the debate, ask them to:
• Write to the Secretary of State calling for a complete ban fracking to be included in the Energy Independence Bill.
Suggested key messages
• The UK needs a rapid transition to clean, renewable energy rather than new fossil fuel extraction.
• Allowing low volume fracking risks undermining climate commitments and creating uncertainty for local communities.
• The Energy Independence Bill provides an opportunity to close potential loopholes and give clarity that fracking has no future in the UK.
• MPs can help secure a cleaner, safer and more sustainable energy future by supporting a complete ban on fracking.
We have an MP briefing which includes more details on why the Energy Independence Bill needs to include a full ban on fracking: MP briefing: How to fully ban fracking | Friends of the Earth
