If you are a parent or carer of a child or young person with SEND, please join us at our coffee morning tomorrow. This is a great opportunity to meet with others in a similar position to share experiences and information, as well as receive support.

We had a relaxed but busy morning at SENSES today, with one family bringing in a gorgeous vegan birthday cake for one of the staff. The children enjoyed playing alongside one another and were considerate of others’ needs. It is wonderful to see their social skills developing. We also saw some fantastic physical advancement taking place.

Our music therapy session for communication at Eastfield this morning was very well attended and a lot of fun.

The children listened carefully for their names and followed the 'stop' instruction well, either on their own or with support. They each featured in a verse of a song which included their name and the instrument they were playing. Time was given for each child to then respond by playing their instrument. It was lovely to hear some small voices become more confident too 😊

We had another new family join us for our busy SENSES in Motion session. After warming up with a song to welcome each child individually by name, we did a variety of activities that involved following instructions, from touching different body parts to shaking instruments high and low with the change of guitar chords. Then we followed the lead of several of the children and played our instruments every time they moved.

The parachute was a lot of fun again after snack time, and the adults were certainly given a workout controlling it to the guitar chords! Before long, it was time to sing our goodbye song and pack all the instruments away. Thank you Jacob for a great morning.

We are excited to officially announce SENSES in Motion!

This project is funded by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire; and York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority. SENSES is very grateful to have received £5000 through the Movement, Activity, and Sport Fund.

This grant will fund a therapist from North Yorkshire Music Therapy Centre, and in collaboration with them, we will deliver twice-monthly specialist movement to music sessions over the next 18 months, as well as two parent and carer Music Support Workshops.

Through this innovative programme, SENSES in Motion will benefit children with autism, sensory processing difficulties, communication needs, and/or physical or learning disabilities. Parents, carers, and siblings will also benefit through opportunities for shared play, social connection, support, and positive family experiences.

The project has been designed to meet the needs of this targeted group through structured but flexible music and movement sessions that allow children to engage at their own developmental level. The therapeutic use of rhythm, movement, sensory play, and shared musical interaction creates opportunities for participation that are accessible to children with a wide range of needs and abilities.

SENSES in Motion will take place once a month at each of our venues: Westway Open Arms in Eastfield, and the Oasis Family Centre in Scarborough. Our next session is tomorrow, Friday 9th October, at our Scarborough venue.

As with all other SENSES sessions, we are able to offer this free of charge to families, due to the generous donations and grants we have received.

The autumnal weather inspired us to paint hedgehogs, which will be added to our display board when they are dry.

The girls very much enjoyed their snack time, and we even had help to sweep up the crumbs! Our story sack today was Rainbow Rob, and they took it in turns to find items in the bag to match Rob's colours.

At the end of the session there was chance for more free play while the adults chatted.

It was interesting, and funny at times, to see what motivated each child to stretch, play with a toy, or complete a task. We had a relaxing morning connecting with friends.

There are so many photos to share from this morning's busy SENSES in Motion! It was lovely to have a new family join in the music therapy fun too.

After singing songs to welcome everyone, the children each had a turn to play the guitar with Jacob, either on their own or with assistance. Then it was time for the egg shakers and bells. We all followed Jacob's instructions for shaking the shakers, and then the children joined in with bells on their arms or legs.

The parachute has definitely become a firm favourite, and the children worked hard to hang on to the straps and move it up and down. They also took it in turns to go underneath and feel the air move around them while everyone else controlled the parachute.
