Germany’s National Veterans Day – 15 June

Today, let’s join with our friends and comrades of the Royal British Legion Bergen-Hohne Branch in recognising Germany’s National Veterans Day.

As members of the Royal British Legion in Scarborough, we acknowledge this important occasion and extend our warmest greetings to all veterans and serving personnel in Germany. Through decades of friendship, cooperation and shared service, British and German veterans have built lasting bonds founded on mutual respect, remembrance and a commitment to peace.

We particularly send our good wishes to the Bergen-Hohne Branch, whose members continue to provide valued support and comradeship to the Armed Forces community overseas.

On this first National Veterans Day, we remember all who have served, honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and celebrate the enduring friendships that unite veterans across nations.

Lest We Forget – Nie vergessen.

D-Day 82nd Anniversary
6 June 2026

Today, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice, and determination of those involved in the landings on the beaches of Normandy on 6 June 1944.

Eighty-two years ago, young men crossed a hostile sea into the uncertainty of battle, many never to return. Their bravery helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today and changed the course of history.

As we honour the fallen, the veterans, and all who served in the liberation of Europe, we remember their duty, their sacrifice, and their legacy.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

As we prepare to mark Armed Forces Day Week, it is fitting that we pause to remember the three Royal Naval personnel who so tragically lost their lives whilst undertaking a helicopter training exercise on 3 June.

Their deaths are a stark reminder that service in our Armed Forces carries risks not only in times of conflict, but also in the demanding training and preparation required to safeguard our nation. They served with professionalism, dedication and courage.

Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, loved ones and shipmates as they come to terms with this devastating loss.

May we honour their memory, give thanks for their service, and remember them with respect and gratitude.

Fair winds and following seas.

We're pleased to announce that the Hawker Fury FB.11 and AutoGyro Calidus will be joining us at Scarborough Armed Forces Day.

The Hawker Fury FB.11 is a British fighter aircraft and was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy. It proved to be a popular aircraft with a number of overseas militaries, and was used during the Korean War in the early 1950s, as well as against the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba.

The AutoGyro Calidus is a small, lightweight aircraft with a freely-spinning rotor on top and an engine-powered propeller. Unlike helicopters, the rotor isn’t driven by the engine – it turns because of the air flowing through it as the aircraft moves forward.

Scarborough Armed Forces Day takes place from 11am until 5pm on Saturday 27 June at Scarborough’s South Bay.
