Royal British Legion Scarborough Branch Charitable Organisation The Branch holds its meetings at 8pm on the first Thursday of each month. Updates can be followed through the FB page.

We want to hear and share with you your stories, achievements, upcoming events and comments in a safe and welcoming environment. To achieve this it is important you follow a few simple rules;

🌺 WHY THE POPPY? WHY REMEMBRANCE?

A WONDERFUL VISIT TO ST PETER’S SCHOOL 🌺

What a lovely day we had at St Peter’s School, continuing our program of visits to local schools to share the story of ‘Why the Poppy? Why Remembrance?’

Pupils from Years 3 to 6 joined us to learn about the importance of the poppy and why we remember, before the whole school came together for a beautiful Act of Remembrance. ❤️

🌺 A special poppy tribute:
The children created a truly amazing whole-school poppy wreath, with every child’s thumbprint and fingerprints helping to form the flowers. Even the nursery children played their part, creating a single, beautiful flower using each child’s own finger or thumbprint. A wonderful way of showing that everyone has a part to play in Remembrance.

🎖️ Moments to be proud of:
Three Year 6 pupils confidently recited the Exhortation, followed by the whole school reciting the Kohima Epitaph. Fantastic effort from everyone, and a very moving moment for us all.

We were then delighted to join the children for a lovely lunch and enjoy a little more time together.

A huge well done to all the pupils and staff at St Peter’s School for your enthusiasm, respect and thoughtful contributions. You did yourselves proud!

Thank you for welcoming us so warmly and helping to keep the spirit of Remembrance alive in our younger generations.

Immediately before kick-off, join the Royal British Legion Scarborough Branch, Scarborough Athletic and Marine for a special Act of Remembrance.
The ceremony will include a Parade of Standards and wreath-laying by both teams and the RBL Scarborough Branch.

From 6:45 Poppy Appeal collectors will be out in the stadium.
If you can, please give generously. Every donation helps the Royal British Legion support our serving personnel, veterans and their families.

Poppy Appeal 2026 • Acts of Remembrance

As we approach Remembrance, Scarborough’s Royal British Legion Branch invites everyone to support this year’s Poppy Appeal and join us in remembering all those who have served, sacrificed and suffered in the cause of peace.

❤️ POPPY APPEAL HUB, BALMORAL CENTRE and Town Centre street collections:
📅 Saturday 24 October - Saturday 7 November
🕙 10am-3pm (sometimes later!)
Closed Sunday 25 October and 1 November.
Pop in, say hello, pick up your poppy or wreath and support our veterans, serving personnel and their families. Every donation makes a difference!

🌺 SUNDAY 1 NOVEMBER - PLANTING THE CROSSES
Garden of Remembrance, Alma Square
11.45am–12.30pm
Join us for this special, solemn act of remembrance, with prayers, the planting of crosses and a parade of standards.

🌺 SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER — REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY
Oliver’s Mount Memorial
Assemble at 10.35am
Join us as we honour the fallen with standards, wreaths, prayers, the Exhortation, Last Post, two minutes’ silence, Reveille and the Kohima Epitaph.

🌺SUNDAY 8 NOVEMBER - LAYING POPPIES ON THE SEA
Queen Street Methodist Church, Lifeboat Slipway and West Pier
9.30am - Acts of Remembrance, blessing of standards and wreaths, and Drumhead Ceremony.
10.35am - Parade led by Scarborough Sea Cadets Band.
10.40am - From the Lifeboat Slipway, concluding with Acts of Remembrance, two minutes’ silence and the laying of poppies on the sea.

Everyone is welcome to join us for all or part of this moving seafront tradition.

🌺 WEDNESDAY 11 NOVEMBER - ARMISTICE DAY
Garden of Remembrance, Alma Square
Assemble by 10.45am
At 11am, we will observe the two minutes’ silence, remembering those who fell at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

🌺A BIG THANK YOU TO THE FRIENDS OF OLIVER’S MOUNT! 🌺
As we head into Remembrance, a huge thank you to the Friends of Oliver’s Mount for their support in helping keep our Cenotaph and its surroundings looking their best for the important days ahead.
Last Sunday morning, eight willing volunteers rolled up their sleeves to tackle litter picking, weeding beneath the Cenotaph terrace, and painting the car park and picnic area sign. 🌺
Their time and effort are appreciated. It’s all part of ensuring that Oliver’s Mount provides a fitting and well-cared-for setting for our Remembrance commemorations.
🌺 Fancy lending a hand?
The next session is Friday 6th November, 1pm - 3pm, meeting at the Cenotaph for a litter pick in preparation for Remembrance Sunday on 8th November.
Litter pickers, hi-vis jackets, gloves, and bags are provided, and a safety briefing takes place before starting. You don’t need to stay for the whole session; any time you can spare will make a difference!

While out and about in Falsgrave distributing Poppy Appeal boxes and collection tins, I came across this wonderful window display at Lexx Hairdressers.
What a fantastic sight! The beautiful display of red poppies is a lovely reminder that Remembrance is approaching and that support is being shown in so many thoughtful ways across our community.

It’s these unexpected moments that make you stop, smile and appreciate the time and effort people put into supporting the Poppy Appeal.

🌺 A SCARBOROUGH SOLDIER REMEMBERED — AT LAST

As Remembrance draws close, we remember Lance Corporal Claude Stanley Dell, a young Scarborough soldier of the 5th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, who was killed in Belgium in April 1915, just a week after arriving in France.

For more than a century, his final resting place remained unknown. In 2021, his remains were discovered accidentally by workmen. Following painstaking research and DNA testing, his identity was finally established.

On 13 October 2026, Claude was laid to rest with full military honours at Poelcapelle British Cemetery, Belgium; his name restored, his sacrifice recognised, and his story brought home.

Claude had enlisted alongside two of his brothers, while two other brothers also served. A family, like so many others, that gave so much during the Great War.

He was lost, but never forgotten.

As we wear our poppies and prepare to remember all who served and sacrificed, Claude’s story reminds us that behind every name is a life, a family and a story that deserves to be remembered.
