We’re so pleased to announced that we are expanding our Art Club offering to include sessions for ages 16-19!

Our Teens session will remain as normal, with the Young Adults session taking place directly afterwards.

The club is a creative safe space for LGBTQ+ young people, but is open to all. Activities include zine-making, photography, drawing and lots of other fun creative stuff!

What a brilliant project that was to work on! Wade and Miki spent 4 Saturdays with photographers (including those new to it!) over in Loftus, and the fantastic Zine that was produced absolutely needed a bit of a fanfare!
So it was great to be invited back by Friends of Loftus Library who gained the funding and initiated the project, and to be alongside them to celebrate this brilliant truly collaborative zine, full of images taken on walks with Wade
Thanks to everyone who took part, we even got a visit from the Mayor!

Join us at Loftus Library for the launch of the Loftus Lens Zine!
This collaborative zine brings together the images taken in Loftus on the Photography walks led by Wade and the workshops with Wade and Miki in the Library over the last fee Saturdays.
Both newbie and more experienced photographers took part, with the final zine really showcasing the workshops.
We’ll see you 11-12 at loftus library on the 12th and you’ll get a free zine too!

Collaboration and community are two of our core values, a thread that runs through every one of our activities. Recently, we have been busy running zine-making workshops with people of all ages and all backgrounds, covering the full extent of the Tees Valley, from East Cleveland to County Durham, working alongside some of our region’s bigger and smaller organisations.

Wade led Photography workshops in Loftus, in collaboration with Friends of Loftus Library funded through Woodsmith, resulting in the production of a collaborative zine. Miki ran zine workshops at Middlesbrough Library, Tees Valley Women’s Centre and the Dorman Museum, for Tees Women Poets, as part of the work they developed for their New Sisterhood project.

Throughout the time working on these projects, the pair have been working side by side on Zine making at Darlington Library, A Teesside University collab, alongside DAR (Darlington Assistance for Refugees) and the Library, a 10 week project which still has a few weeks to run.

The projects have given our two workers the opportunity to try zine making with communities for different purposes, with a mix of outcomes, and with a broad cross-section of people, all bringing their stories to zine making.

Miki reflected on the workshops ‘It’s been a really busy time but for me it’s given an opportunity to continue the work we love, meeting loads of new people and using what we can share between us. We’ve used zines to inspire people to take and share their amazing photography, to help recount stories of 80s women’s activism and journeys fleeing danger taking people across the world. It’s been a real inspiration seeing what people make from paper, a typewriter, scraps, glue and stamps!’

‘Working with partner organisations is absolutely a learning experience, with every one having different objectives and working practices, but ultimately it’s about those who take part. Challenges are part of what keeps our work interesting.’

Wade continued: ‘Our collab projects have been about bringing people together in a way that puts focus on what brings us together, rather than what sets us apart in these hard politically polarised times.
The beauty has been the sense of togetherness. We have pooled a wealth of knowledge that comes from all backgrounds and stories that spread across the globe.
Most importantly has been how our art has torn down the age divide between young and old - it is the realisation that we can learn from anybody, no matter their age. Zine making continues to prove that it removes barriers that social media would have you believe exist indefinitely. It is clear that yes, creativity continues to unite us all’.

Since January, Tees Zine Works has been trialing an LGBT Youth art group, a safe space that also welcomes allies.

When we were getting started, funding from Woodsmith allowed us to create the structure for a weekly meet for young artists.

Starting in Redcar initially before moving to our permanent base at The Earthbeat Centre, Saltburn, our Tuesday night group has seen dedicated members join. While we still see ourselves as a growing project, we have certainly built a core group who are incredibly passionate about zines and the opportunities they bring.

From zines that feature full storyboard sketches of famous music videos, to zines celebrating trans lives - we’ve seen a lot! Our youngest member even brings a skater vibe to the group that makes Wade and Miki reminisce of the halcyon days of skater magazines of the 90s!

Our group doesn’t just meet to create, we meet to plan for exciting opportunities. Earlier this year at our annual Zine Fest in Middlesbrough we had our first EVER Youth stall. The young people saw a zine fest in action and were encouraged to be confident in selling their own zines. That went so well that we took our group just last week to the Teesside Radical Bookfair - they were a BIG hit!

Wade & Miki are passionate about creating safe spaces for young artists. Our young people are passionate about being a voice for marginalised communities.

We’ve only just begun!

Wade of TZW said ‘This is still a group in its early stages and we are so proud of our zinesters. We have now been lucky enough to gain funding from Point North to continue to expand our activities. We have projects planned throughout the year that celebrate pride, introduce our group to photography and other art forms, as well as a project our group are hugely passionate about for world aids day in December’

We wish to thank Woodsmith and Point North for helping to expand our group and to continue to offer a safe space for young people to be creative.

This Thursday we have 4 more weeks left of our part in the Connected Communities project at Darlington Library, part of a 10 week run of workshops, funded by Teesside University

We've been working with DAR - the Darlo based organisation which supports newly arrived communities in the town, and we've met some frankly amazing people, heard their stories and found out about their interests all through Zine Making.

We've been working alongside some amazing people, an incredibly diverse group who share wonderful stories from across the world with the fab staff from the Library and Teesside Uni.

One of these attendees has made zines about flowers, completely unexpected from a lad in his 20s and we've scoured the Zine library. Wade brought soil and plant pots for him and we've set him off with a windowsill garden and info about local flower shows. People never cease to amaze. Zines mean the lack of shared language isn't a barrier to these experiences, and they can be accessed by all.

We'll miss this when it's done, but you can see the results at Hope Town on the afternoon of the 18th June

Another gorgeous session led by Wade tutoring for a photography zine. This brings together ages across the complete spectrum in Loftus currently, to share a passion for photography that will culminate in a group zine. This is what community is, young and old swapping stories and teaching each other. The best part is the happiness it brings to us, the feeling of being a part of something. This is cohesion!
