Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation

Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation The Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation is a Registered Charity Founded in aid and support of the promotion of Music, Drama and the Performing Arts

The idea of a Performing Arts Foundation came from the founder Sue Hooper in the late 1990’s. Sue has been associated with the Performing Arts from childhood, she entered into competitive Music, Speech and Drama Festivals – was an active member of local Amateur Dramatic Societies, and taught Speech and Drama privately – she was also Co-Founder of the Saltash Music Speech and Drama Festival. Throug

h these organisations, Sue was aware that there were many talented young people in every discipline of the Performing Arts, who were totally committed to learning and further developing their skills at Regional and National level, but with limited funding to do so. She was aware that funding opportunities for middle of the road skills were very limited, and she saw a gap in which a Bursary Trust may be able to assist. Sue sought help and advice from a colleague, Peter Durbin, a local Solicitor, who was enthusiastic and encouraging; Peter, kindly drew up the application and mission statement, with the required aims and objectives to the Charity Commission. In July 2000 the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation was set up following a large donation from its founder Sue Hooper. The Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation was up and running as a Registered Charity (Founded in aid and support of the promotion of Music, Drama and the Performing Arts). Since then several thousands of pounds has been donated to young musicians for instruments, Regional and National auditions, competitions, workshops and equipment. Young beneficiaries have gone on to appear in the Royal Albert Hall, National Youth Orchestra, National Ballet, National Theatre School, Covent Garden, Wayne Sleep School Of Ballet, West End Musical – and top Musical Colleges, Universities and Conservatoires – in addition have won top marks in local and County Music Festivals.

Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation: Celebrating 25 Years of Service (2000–2025)
The Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025—a joyful milestone in a journey defined by generosity, creativity, and community spirit. Founded in 2000 by Sue Hooper MBE, the Foundation was established to encourage and support young people in the arts, helping them realise their talents and ambitions across music, drama, dance, and creative performance.
Over the past quarter of a century, the Foundation has awarded countless grants and sponsorships, offering opportunities that have transformed lives. Many recipients have gone on to distinguished careers on national and international stages, while others have carried the confidence and discipline gained through the arts into every aspect of their lives.
On behalf of the Trustees, Sue and reflecting on this special anniversary, Sue said:
“It has been very satisfying to see young people flourish through the arts. Their success, passion, and creativity are the Foundation’s greatest reward.”
The Foundation’s work extends well beyond individual awards. Through concerts, educational projects, and community partnerships, it has enriched cultural life throughout Saltash and parts of Cornwall, demonstrating the trustees steadfast belief that the arts are vital to community well-being and social cohesion.
None of this would have been possible without the dedicated trustees, volunteers, patrons, sponsors and supporters whose generosity and faith have sustained the Foundation from its earliest days.
Looking ahead, the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation remains committed to expanding its outreach, supporting schools and local arts initiatives, and continuing to champion creativity for all. As it celebrates this 25-year milestone, the Foundation does so with gratitude, pride, and a renewed sense of purpose—lighting the way for the next generation of talent.
