Honouring a Lasting Legacy in Bagmati

On 18 June 2026, the retrofitted Area Welfare Centre (AWC) Bagmati in Kathmandu was officially opened by His Majesty’s Ambassador to Nepal, His Excellency Rob Fenn.

The ceremony marked a tribute to the extraordinary generosity of Leonard and Gladys Bramall, whose significant support to The Gurkha Welfare Trust made a lasting difference to Gurkha veterans, their families, and communities across Nepal. Their contribution has left a legacy that will endure for generations.

The upgraded AWC Bagmati now stands as a symbol of that legacy - continuing to deliver vital welfare services with dignity, care, and excellence.

Through this centre, the Bramalls’ vision has lived on in action, as GWT continues its commitment to providing high‑quality support to those who have served.

A legacy honoured. A commitment carried forward.

Field visits are at the very heart of what we do. Our field teams travel to some of the most remote villages in Nepal to deliver vital medical care, financial support, and, just as importantly, a friendly face and a listening ear to our brave Gurkha veterans and resilient widows. Take a look at some recent moments from Bhojpur.

Rfn Ram Bahadur Rai, a former Gurkha soldier, was born in a remote village in Khotang. As a young man, he left his home and family to serve with courage in distant lands like Malaya, Borneo, and Hong Kong.

He gave over 7 years of his youth in service to the British Crown, facing hardships, making sacrifices, and enduring struggles far from home. Today, he lives quietly in Nepal, holding onto memories that still bring tears to his eyes. “Listening to his story was both heartbreaking and inspiring.Thank you for your service. ” Mukesh Thamsuhang, AAWO.

Behind every school we build in Nepal is a team overcoming some of the harshest terrain in the world. 🛠️🏔️

Today, we want you to meet one of the incredible people making it happen, Project Supervisor Mahesh Kumar Rana.

For over two decades, Mahesh has navigated unpredictable mountain weather, managed remote building sites above 2,000 meters, and even used mule tracks to transport cement before roads existed. From building earthquake-resilient classrooms to prioritising inclusive employment for local workers, Mahesh's dedication is changing lives.

Yesterday marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This day highlights the importance of protecting older people from abuse, neglect, and exploitation while promoting their rights, dignity, and wellbeing.

Purple ribbons, the symbol of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, were distributed to staff, residents and pensioners at our Area Welfare Centres and Residential Homes in Kaski and Dharan, demonstrating our commitment to supporting and respecting older people.

Our Area Welfare Centre in Gorkha recently held a three-day doctor’s clinic. Many of our pensioners journeyed from distant villages.

87 year-old LCpl Indra Bahadur Thapa travelled from Pipalchhap, a village 130km away, under challenging conditions. Due to a knee problem, he had to be carried into the clinic by his son, Rudra Bahadur Thapa, who proudly supports him in this way each time he visits AWC Gorkha.

We’re constaty reviewing and improving our infrastructure to ensure that the changing needs of our pensioners are met. Wheelchair access and a disabled-friendly toilet are already planned for the centre.
