Meet Salma M***a Matende, a 14-year-old girl from the village of Msijute. Her journey has been full of challenges. At just five years old, Salma started school, but soon after, she began struggling with health issues that affected her ability to walk and speak clearly.
Her family’s limited finances made it difficult to address these challenges, but Salma’s determination never wavered. Despite everything, Salma excelled. By Grade Four, she passed the national exam, an achievement many of her peers could not reach.
“I didn’t expect Salma to pass the national exam, given her health challenges, but she amazed us all,” said her Headteacher.
Salma has participated in EduKaid’s inclusion project, which ensures children with special needs are not left behind and equips teachers with the skills to support and include students in the classroom and across the curriculum. As Salma’s confidence grew she took up the opportunity to join a dance group and became an active member of a performing arts group which performs at a number of festivals showcasing educational themes. Her success caught attention and opened new opportunities for her
“I was so happy to join the dancing club and be part on sharing knowledge through dancing and singing but also what used to excite me more is when they made me to be someone to lead and show dancing moves that was awesome, I felt not left behind and my contribution to the team was seen” - said Salma
After excelling in her Grade Seven exams, Salma earned a spot at Mkapa girls secondary school in Masasi district, a boarding school for secondary education. But here’s the challenge: due to her family’s financial struggles, she has not yet been able to start school for the new academic year in January 2026. Her parents continue to work hard with small seasonal businesses, but the school supplies required remain as a setback for Salma to go back to school to continue her education.
“I run small businesses, selling roasted groundnuts but when the season ends, I have no income. That’s why providing Salma with school needs on time has been difficult,” said her father.
“I came to the headteacher to explain our situation, hoping for support, because we know how much effort has gone into helping Salma succeed,” added her mother.
“It hurts my heart every day knowing that I cannot go to school while my friends are learning. I love school and I want to study hard, but right now, I can only wait. I dream of the day I will sit in class again, learn new things, and make my family proud.” Said Salma
Salma’s story is a true inspiration, but she still needs support to continue her educational journey. The headteacher, who has closely followed Salma’s journey since the inclusion project, is reaching out to EdUKaid and the community to help open doors for Salma ensuring that her determination and talent are not wasted due to financial barriers.
There are many more children that still need our help just like Salma. Please if you can head over to our website www.edukaid.com because your donations make a big difference.
