Volunteers at the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (BDAC), Salisbury, have been awarded the Kings Award for Voluntary Service 2025.

This prestigious honour, equivalent to an MBE, is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK, recognising exceptional community service.

John Sharpe MBE, BDAC’s Project Director and founder, said: “I am thrilled by this news and am so proud that the Museum’s volunteers are to receive this well-deserved award. This recognises many years, and in some cases decades, of dedicated continuous voluntary service by them to our organisation and the wider community."

In October 2023, BDAC was awarded accredited status by Arts Council England, which is the 'gold standard' benchmark for well-run museums and galleries in the UK. Since forming at MoD Boscombe Down in 1999 before opening to the public at Old Sarum in 2012, the museum has expanded but remains relatively small compared to other accredited aviation attractions, such as the RAF Museum in London.
Previously known as The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, this award was established in 2002 to mark Her Late Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee and was continued following the accession of His Majesty The King. Recipients are announced annually on 14th November, The King’s Birthday.

Representatives of BDAC will receive the crystal award and certificate in the spring of 2026 from Dame Sarah Troughton, Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, at a local ceremony. In addition, two volunteers from BDAC will attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace next summer, along with other recipients of this year’s award.

🚨 Councils and housing associations now have to fix emergency hazards within 24 hours. 🚨

Emergency hazards are problems that could cause you or someone you live with serious harm if they aren't fixed by this deadline.

They include:
➡️ gas leaks
➡️ burst water main pipes
➡️ dangerous electrical wiring
➡️ serious damp and mould that causes breathing problems
➡️ no hot water or heating – especially in cold weather

Fixing the problem can include temporary measures to make your home safe. For example, a mould treatment.
If they cannot make your home safe in 24 hours, they must offer you free temporary rehousing.
Your landlord must also do any further work that’s needed to stop emergency hazards coming back.
