Dear Cafe Sci Supporter

We are unable to use the Rugby Club for our meeting next Tuesday on the 2nd June.

Instead the talk will be held in Sarum College, 19 the Close Salisbury, SP1 2EE.

Talk entitled ‘The onset of modern-style plate tectonics’ starts at 7.30pm as usual, Sorry but we have not organised bar.

There is very limited car parking on site but there is covered bike parking at the rear of the college. I do however understand that after 6 pm free parking is available in the spaces marked with an 'S' adjacent to the Cathedral Green.

Lush house car park in Cranebridge Road is the nearest car park and is free after 6pm.
N.B. Old George Mall car park closes at 8 pm.

The website Gremlins are proving tricky to eradicate, and this month, the newsletter has been put together on a mobile phone. So please forgive any errors/omissions, but here are the posters for June and July.

In particular if you get the "text only" version of the newsletter, the words may not be correct...

Hopefully everything will be back to normal by the start of the 2026-27 season...

A History of the Universe in 60 Million Galaxies

The March talk will be given by Dr Seshadri Nadathur who will be talking about his research into the history of the universe and fundamental physics. In this talk he will describe the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, or DESI, which is a survey using a telescope on a desert mountaintop to create a precise map of the positions of 60 million galaxies, and how he uses this map to measure the faint remnants of ripples imprinted at the Big Bang itself....

The science of piano sound: from physical principles to digital preservation

The January talk will be given by Dr. Giacomo Squicciarini with Pablo Miranda Valiente, talking about their work on piano acoustics. Have you ever wondered what happens when a piano key is pressed? This talk takes you behind the scenes of one of the most fascinating musical instruments and explores the physics and engineering that shape its sound. The discussion covers the mechanisms that create tone, including hammer impacts, vibrating strings and the resonant soundboard, and shows how mathematical models reveal and predict these complex interactions....
