A reminder that the July talk will be given By Professor Andrew Gorringe who will be talking about his research into Whooping Cough vaccines.
Prof. Gorringe will be talking about whooping cough (pertussis), tracing the development and effect of vaccines since the 1950s to the present. He will highlight the important work done at Porton and describe how the acellular vaccine in use in the UK from 2004 has protected infants from serious disease but has allowed infections to spread in older children and adults. This resulted in a huge increase in whooping cough after the COVID-19 pandemic. Better vaccines are needed and they are being tested in human challenge studies, developed at Southampton.
Andrew has had a long career in vaccine research working with the UK Health Security Agency at Porton. He has worked on the development of bacterial vaccines including pertussis, meningitis and Group B Streptococcus. He is also a Visiting Professor at University of Bath.
