📣 VOLUNTEERS WANTED – HELP US MAKE SALISBURY MORE ACCESSIBLE!

DIGS is starting a new project looking at accessibility in shops and businesses across Salisbury, and we need some volunteers to help us make it happen.

We’re looking for people who can spare some time to help us visit local businesses and complete a simple accessibility checklist.

You do not need to be an accessibility expert. DIGS will provide the paperwork and guidance you need. Your job is simply to look at the things that can make a real difference to disabled customers and record what you find.

We’ll be looking at things such as:
♿ Physical access
👀 Visibility and signage
🦻 Communication and customer service
🚻 Accessible facilities where applicable
🪑 Seating and space
📋 Other simple accessibility issues that can affect customers

The aim is not to criticise businesses. We want to identify what is working well, what could be improved, and help local businesses make their services more accessible.

If you have an interest in accessibility, disability, your local community — or simply want to help make Salisbury better for everyone — we’d love to hear from you.

Truth post incoming....

As many of you are aware Disability Interest Group of Salisbury - DIGS has been my life for 6 years with the help of some amazing people.

But the time has come to be honest and say without more members, volunteers and 2 x trustees we are at serious risk of disbanding.

What keeps us going....
The need in the community, not only do we run 1/2 or 3 drop ins a week but in the month of August I saw 75 people in my hone who need help to access the help and support they need.

What do we need from you....

A few hours a week or month whatever time you can offer

What happens if we are unable to get more help....

We are at serious risk of disbanding which is the last thing we want.

What changes are being made...
Currently the community work will continue but all audit work will be taken on by me in a self employed role

Can you help before the disabled population is put back into the situation they were 3/4 years ago.

Does this suit anybody

Urgently seeking a new School Crossing Patrol Officer (Lollipop Person) for Manor Fields Primary School /Highbury Avenue. I managed to get the funding restored for this vital role 18 months ago but the first incumbent was taken ill and had to quit. After much pestering Wiltshire Council have re-advertised the post (see the link). This job is vital for pupil safety and is a tremendous opportunity for someone to be able to support this local community school. The expectation is 30 minutes at each end of the day. The job has a competitive salary and full training is given. Please contact me if you would like to know more or get in touch with Wiltshire Council directly.

The month of August saw us do 75 one to ones in our homes risking everyone's safety

We are aware that Wiltshire council has TSOs who help their residents (Wiltshire Council residents) but they dont help any other residents.

Within those 75 there was

30 PIP reviews
25 UC claims
15 Housing issues (moving etc)
5 more serious issues

These dont include those we see at Drop ins or those we visit.

DIGS – Disability Interest Group in Salisbury – is looking for new people to join us.

We are currently recruiting:

🔹 DIGS Members
Want your voice heard? Become a member and help us understand the issues affecting disabled people and our communities.

🔹 Volunteers
We need people who can give their time, skills and enthusiasm to support our work, campaigns, drop-ins, events and community activities.

🔹 Trustees
We are looking for people who can help provide the governance, knowledge and support needed to help DIGS grow and develop.

You don't have to be an expert in accessibility.

You don't have to have loads of spare time.

What matters is that you are reliable, respectful, willing to learn and passionate about making things better.

DIGS is disabled-led, and lived experience is hugely important to us. We want to hear from disabled people, family members, carers, professionals and members of our wider community who want to help create meaningful change.

Whether you can give us a few hours, get involved regularly, bring specialist skills, or want to help shape the future of DIGS — we want to hear from you.

The partnership and working relationship we have with , Salisbury City Council and Salisbury City Communities really helps us know what we are doing is the right thing.

Are they perfect? NO
Are they trying? YES
Are they improving? YES
Are they willing to learn? YES
Are they willing to listen? YES

Although we work with mainly management (Asa, Matt & Jay) we have spent a long time building those relationships with some Cllrs (there choice to not be part of helping the disabled community of Salisbury).

We are also looking for other local businesses who want to go that 1 step further with accessibility.
20% of our community have a disability whether visible or invisible, imagine adding up to 20% extra to your taking.
