Breastfeeding as a disabled parent may mean that some positions may be difficult or impossible for you to do.

Fear not❗

Breastfeeding positions are not set in stone, every parent and baby will have their own version of each position and what works best for them. They are a guideline rather than an instruction. 🤱

The only thing you need to ensure is that the baby is well latched and that both you and baby are comfortable.

Planning and testing positions out before the baby arrives is the best idea, for everyone, but especially if you need to take into account your own disabilities.
Attending our antenatal classes is a good starting point or you’re welcome to chat to one of our peer supporters on webchat or attend our events to chat face to face.☺

We define solo parenting as raising a child entirely solo, with you as the only person with parental responsibility for your child, with no financial or parenting input from anyone else. This may be because you chose to become a solo parent and have a child via IVF without a partner or you may have been widowed.
👶
Solo parenting gives you freedom to choose how you want to parent your child without having to make any compromises with anyone due to potential differing views.
👍
Therefore if you want to breastfeed, no one is going to be there to dissuade you BUT also no one is there to cheer you on either.
🙃
As a solo parent the most important thing for you is support, having the right support around you in all areas of your life.
Our antenatal classes are a great place to start, our socials followed, our webchat in saved places and number saved in speed dial for 24/7 support.
🤱
If you are a solo parent or considering becoming one we’d recommend checking out

Breastfeeding after IVF pregnancies is generally no different from breastfeeding after naturally conceived pregnancies. ...
17/06/2026

Breastfeeding after IVF pregnancies is generally no different from breastfeeding after naturally conceived pregnancies. The process of conception through IVF does not directly interfere with a woman's ability to produce breast milk. However, there may be additional considerations due to the reasons for fertility treatment, the age of the mother, and the health of the baby. 🤱

There is also the emotional and physical stress associated with infertility and fertility treatments which could potentially affect a woman's breastfeeding experience. Stress can sometimes impact milk production, so finding ways to manage stress and create a supportive environment can be beneficial. Engaging in relaxation techniques, seeking emotional support, and practising self-care can help reduce stress levels and promote breastfeeding success.

Some babies conceived via IVF may be born prematurely and/or by caesarean section and multiple births are more likely too. In such cases initiating breastfeeding might be delayed and alternative feeding methods, such as pumping and providing expressed breast milk, may be necessary until the baby is able to directly breastfeed. 🍼

Seeking support before, during and after birth can help ensure a successful and fulfilling breastfeeding experience for everyone, not just mothers who have conceived through IVF but it may be even more important for those to have support in place before birth.

Remember, every breastfeeding journey is unique, and with the right resources and support all families can enjoy the many benefits that breastfeeding offers both mother and child. 🥰

For this post by the term single parent we mean separated parents where both are still alive and have parental responsibility and access to the child.
👶
However and whenever your single parent status came about, breastfeeding can become a contentious issue between parents if it is sighted as a reason for your child not to have 50/50 access between both parents.
💔
Breastfeeding is an incredibly complex and important relationship between the breastfeeding parent and child and any compromises that may have to be made to it to accommodate access to the other parent can be distressing for both parents and child.
🤱
If the parents are still amicable it is always best to try and make arrangements without the involvement of court.
In an ideal world the other parent would still be supportive of breastfeeding and respect the accommodations and sacrifices they may need to make to allow breastfeeding to be established and continue.
👍
However if access arrangements need to be put in place by a court it is, unfortunately, very much down to the judge to make the decisions "in the best interest of the child" and they may not always be fully informed on the breastfeeding relationship and its importance to the child's mental and physical development.
👨‍⚖️
Breastfeeding is more likely to be taken into account if the child is under 6 months or 1 year old, although even then sometimes formula or "the mother can express" is thought an acceptable alternative.
🤱
If you are a single parent, contact with the other parent does NOT mean that breastfeeding has to end.
Children will likely make up for it once back with you after contact, for both connection and comfort if not just food.
You can also express whilst apart from your child to maintain your supply or even just for comfort if your child is older.
👶
Are you a single parent? How has contact with the other parent worked for you and your breastfeeding journey? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Induced lactation is where a parent who hasn't been pregnant starts producing breastmilk.
🤰
You may wish to do this if you are having a baby via surrogacy, adopting or are in an LGBTQ+ relationship and you're the non gestational parent.
🤰
As we talked about yesterday, breastmilk is made on a supply and demand basis so you can induce lactation by providing the correct ni**le stimulation by using a breast pump.
However as you have not been pregnant and have not breastfed before then this will take longer and will need even more work and dedication than if you were relactating.
💪
It can take around 4 weeks before you start to produce any breast milk, so it's important to start well in advance and have good lactation support in place if you know this is what you want to do.
🤱
It is unlikely that you will ever build a full milk supply so unless you are sharing breastfeeding with your partner you will likely need to supplement your baby with either donor milk or formula.
If using donor milk then using an SNS to feed this will help maintain and maximise your own breast milk supply as baby is still at your breast whilst being fed the donor milk.
🤱
Inducing lactation is an incredible thing to do for your child, we'd love to hear a real life story on this if anyone has one to share.
🤱

Relactating is when someone restarts producing breast milk after a gap, without giving birth to another child. They may have not breastfed for several weeks, months or even years.🤱

You may want to relactate for many reasons,
🤱 You or your child has been ill and you've been unable to express during that period
🤱You stopped before you were truly ready and want to restart
🤱 You have adopted a baby and want to breastfeed them

How's it's done? With some stubborn determination and hard work.
It should be easier the shorter the time that has elapsed since you last breastfed.☺️

Breast milk production is based on supply and demand, so the first step is restarting that demand.
This can either be by putting your baby to the breast, if they will latch, or by pumping.
It's important to get as much skin to skin time with your child as possible as well as ni**le stimulation either from baby or a pump.

Whilst working on re-establishing your supply you may want to look at using an SNS as this ensures that baby is getting enough milk whilst simultaneously providing the ni**le stimulation.

Reach out for support if you are considering relactating.🥰👇
