Congratulations to Jenni, CEO of Salford Loaves and Fishes, on becoming Chair of Pendleton Neighbourhood Board.

As part of the Pride in Place Programme, Pendleton has been chosen to receive up to £20 million of funding from the current Government.

Each Board will give local people the power to decide how funding is spent, putting communities in charge of the future of their area.

Wider Neighbourhood Board recruitment is now well underway to put together a board that truly reflects the diversity and spirit of Salford.

Did you know our history in Salford dates back as far back as 2007?

This was when a group of people came together to set up Emmaus Salford to help people move on from homelessness.

Our first charity shop opened in 2009, helping generate some of the funding we needed for our residential community home, which opened to residents in 2014.

Emmaus president Sir Terry Waite KCMG CBE cut the ribbon in 2015.

In 2016 we were awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for the role our volunteers played in establishing Emmaus Salford.

The following year we opened the Emmaus Salford Emporium in Swinton.

In 2017 we launched social supermarket Lucie’s Pantry, and during Covid, we delivered essential items to pantry members and distributed food packs to vulnerable people in Salford.

During 2020 we opened The People’s Pods to support people who are sleeping rough, in partnership with Salford City Council.

In 2025, we opened our barber's shop Minds and Manes and Emmaus Salford received support from the then-Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

This year, we opened our new Live Well Space, where we continue to grow our services to support our local community.

Great news! Ethan has now moved on from Emmaus Salford into independent living.

Ethan continues to volunteer at the Step Forward Programme of social activities at Salford Lad’s and Girl’s Club, which he started while he was a resident at Emmaus Salford.

This is run by First Kick Foundation in conjunction with Salford Loaves and Fishes and Emmaus Salford, as part of our Live Well Space of events and activities.

Ethan said: “Volunteering with First Kick is one of the best things I have ever done. The staff believe in me and I’m really enjoying it.

“I think volunteering is a good experience no matter who you are. You are gaining life skills. There might be people who have never volunteered in their lives, who can help others.

“Months ago, it might have been hard for me to get out of my comfort zone, but the people I’m volunteering with have helped me make that change. Rise Up , First Kick and Emmaus have all helped me with this.”

The Step Forward Programme is a welcoming and supportive space where people can come together, stay active and improve their wellbeing through a range of light activities and social engagement.

It runs every Monday and Thursday, 1:00pm – 2:30pm at Salford Lad’s and Girls’ Club, and everyone is welcome.

Ethan added: “Everyone can come. People have a good laugh. I have been volunteering with First Kick for a few weeks now. We can help people there with referrals and courses, and have one-to-one chats. We check in that everyone is okay.”

The hairdressing course is well underway as part of our charity's Live Well Space.

Learners from the local community and one of our charity residents have been getting together with Vidal Sassoon-trained hair expert Annabelle Totty to learn their way around cutting, shaping and styling.

Great to get even more tips from Annabelle about our social enterprise - Minds & Manes barbers - which runs from our community hub on Fitzwarren Street in Pendleton in addition to our charity shop, pantry and other services 👍
