Our CEO Ruth Daniel is presenting The State of Emergency Saturday 10 October at as part of .io - a live audiovisual performance lecture drawing on frontline experiences from around the world, asking what music, art and culture can do in a time of multiple crises, and how creativity can become a force for hope, connection and action.

“I got a bit bored of presenting keynote style. Then I saw Laurie Anderson perform her Republic of Love in Reykjavik, and I thought: I want to try something like that.
 
So I reached out to my friend Matt Black of Coldcut and Ninja Tune. He wasn’t able to jump in as a collaborator, but he introduced me to Faabia Tekena-Sekibo, a brilliant young artist based in London. We got talking, and we’ve since built something together that I’m very nervous about and also really proud of.
 
It’s called The State of Emergency, a live audiovisual performance lecture in four parts. It’s a talk about the world we’re living in right now, and how the arts can be a powerful response to the injustices of our times, told through sound, film, conversation and live performance. We’re channelling our full inner Laurie Anderson.

It premieres this Saturday 10 October in Cinema 1 at the Barbican, in the morning session of The Future Is Sound. I can’t wait to share it and see how the audience responds.

Next up in our board member spotlights it’s new member, Morgan Donoghue ✨

Morgan Donoghue is a New Zealand music, technology and commercial executive whose career spans live entertainment, recorded music, artist management, telecommunications, music software, consumer technology, global brands, retail and distribution. Raised in eco-communities in the Coromandel in a family deeply connected to activism and conservation, Morgan’s environmental values continue to shape his charitable and community work.

Morgan began his music career touring with New Zealand bands before moving into road and tour management, working on the Big Day Out and helping deliver more than 100 international artist tours. At EMI/Virgin Music, he worked with artists including Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Beastie Boys, Blur and Gorillaz, while helping develop New Zealand acts including Goodshirt, The Black Seeds and Salmonella Dub.

With now more than 60 members, the GAB is a collective of engaged, enthusiastic, compassionate individuals working in the music industry who support and guide In Place of War’s work.

With one month to go until Amsterdam Dance Event 2026, join our CEO Ruth Daniel, our Global Music Advisory Board Member Shannon Herber (Wise River Consulting) and Gareth Deakin (Sonorous Global Consulting) and the The Association For Electronic Music for a pre-ADE preparation and networking session ahead of one of the busiest weeks in the year for electronic music.

This session is open to everyone, and is particularly useful if you're heading to ADE for the first time.

We'll be sharing practical tips and tricks on how to navigate the week, alongside insights into the official programming of ADE and opportunities on offer.

EarthSonic Pledge is a programme connecting creative climate leaders aged 18–30 with leaders from the global music and creative industries.

The first stage of the Pledge is focused on listening to, supporting and connecting young people working at the intersection of creativity and climate action. This autumn, we are offering a 3-month mentorship programme - tailored 1-1 sessions with a leader from the global music or creative industries, focused on your personal climate leadership and professional goals.

If you’re 18-30 with an interest in creative climate action projects, or simply looking to answer some questions or unlock new collaborations, this opportunity is for you.

Chris is Co-Founder and CEO at Hospital Records, everyone's favourite drum and bass brand. Established in 1996 with Tony Colman, Hospital pioneered artist development within the genre, discovering names such as High Contrast, Netsky and Camo+Krooked.

Hospitality launched in Shoreditch in 2001, and has since grown into the award-winning club and festival brand it is today. 100% independent, the Hospital group incorporates publishing company Songs In The Key Of Knife, and live events partnership Undivide.

We just wrapped our first ever EarthSonic Local programme, an Arts Council England funded project that saw grassroots music venues across England deliver workshops to inspire and up-skill young people in climate change knowledge and music production.

Through an open call across the country, we recruited young people to take part in workshops delivered in-person and online via our brilliant venue partners: Bootleg Social, The Hot Tin, Future Yard, The Sugarmill Stoke, Exeter Phoenix, Parish Huddersfield and The Cornish Bank.

Participants learnt how to record, sample and archive sounds with equipment and software donated from Roland and Ableton, using local nature sounds to understand and tell the story of climate change and issues affecting biodiversity loss, with the opportunity to create, release and showcase new music.

The project culminated in live showcase events and a new album of selected tracks created during the project, which will be released via the EarthSonic label in late 2026.

We were amazed and inspired by the energy, creativity and activism of the programme’s participants and can’t wait to share their work with you!
