Ten years ago, in 2016, Oil Change International demonstrated that: 'The reserves in currently operating oil and gas fields alone, even with no coal, would take the world beyond 1.5°C.'

Among their recommendations: 'No new fossil fuel extraction or transportation infrastructure should be built, and governments should grant no new permits for them.'

In 2021 the International Energy Agency declared that '[e]xploitation and development of new oil and gas fields must stop this year ... if the world is to stay within safe limits of global heating and meet the goal of net zero emissions by 2050'.

And yet here we are in 2026, with the UK government still permitting the extraction of oil and gas from new fields, increasing the global supply of fossil fuels (and thereby almost certainly increasing the total amount of them that ultimately get burnt, further deepening the climate crisis').

A further decision on the even-more-climate-busting Rosebank oil & gas field is still to be announced.

The energy industry has made £125 billion from UK operations since 2020, with global profits exceeding half a trillion pounds - and yet the calls to scrap the windfall tax keep coming.

The windfall tax exists so that oil and gas producers contribute more when high energy prices boost their profits. Yet politicians, like First Minster John Swinney, says the Energy Profits Levy must go.

Protecting workers, investing in renewables, fighting the climate crisis and tackling fuel poverty should go together.

Keep the windfall tax and use the revenue to help households, improve homes and support a fair transition to affordable clean energy.

Official data has revealed that between July 2025 and July 2026, Department for Energy Security & Net Zero ministers met almost five times more often with fossil fuel giants Shell and BP than with fuel poverty groups and charities.

Over the course of the year, ministers met with Shell and BP 23 times, while fuel poverty campaigners were offered just 5 meetings.

The autumn Budget at the end of this month is the opportunity for ministers to prove that they are willing to listen – not to oil and gas companies making their highest profits in years, but to families desperately needing extra support over the coming months.
