Check out this beauty we came across yesterday! It’s an Oil beetle, so called as they exude an irritating oil from their leg joints when threatened.

Did you know they have an extraordinary life cycle?
The female digs a burrow and lays thousands of eggs. When they hatch, the larvae climb up flower stems and hitch a ride on solitary bees. Once back at the bee’s nest the larvae make themselves at home. They munch on the bee eggs and any provisions the bee provides for its own larvae. They then pupate and come out the following Spring as adults.

We are Daróg Ecology.

Providing all of your ecological survey needs across SW England.

Our name derives from Dar, meaning Oak in the Cornish and Irish languages. Óg means little in Irish. So, we are basically an acorn at this point but that’s where mighty Oaks come from. 😉
