New Greens Safer Streets Campaign The aims of the NGSSC are to campaign for safer roads, streets and public spaces within New Greens

Hi New Greens Residents, this is really important for our community.

Please could you sign the petition asking for a community consultation on how the council proposes to spend £6.5 million of our taxes on changing rooms with two rooms on top and call it a ‘community hub.’

Please send around to all your WhatsApp groups and mailing lists. https://stalbans.moderngov.co.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=49&RPID=5757566&HPID=5757566

Questions have been raised about a percieved lack of any real consultation with interested parties over the district council’s £6m restoration of a New Greens sports pavilion . Update- lamppost at Maple Ave/Toulmin Dr. An email today says this will be replaced on or around 24th November - 4 months after it was knocked over and reported on 24 July.

(I was not acting as a councillor in this matter as this is not within St Michael’s Parish Council boundaries - this was made clear on my emails)

This Tuesday (7 October), Council officers are visiting for 90 minutes of “community action.”
We hope they’ll use this time wisely — by focusing on the long-standing issues as a result of neglect:

🚸 Tired, broken street signs repaired by residents
💡 Lampposts knocked down but not replaced.
🌳 Uncared for trees and bushes forcing people into the road and hiding safety signs
🚗 Cars speeding, driving on pavements, or parking dangerously
🚙 No enforcement on double yellows, corners, or grass verges
🚴 Lack of protection for cyclists on the N6 Cycle Way through New Greens
🕳️ Pot holes
🚸 No safe crossings for children on Green Lane or Francis Avenue
🚗💨 The use of New Greens as a rat-run to by-pass the Harvester lights.
🥴 Cracked pavements causing trip hazards

While some of these fall under Highways/Herts County Council residents expect joined-up thinking — not buck-passing. We need officers who will speak up for us and work together to make lasting change.

✨ The aims of the New Greens Safer Streets Campaign:
• Campaign for safer roads and public spaces
• Reduce dangerous driving and illegal parking
• Work with authorities, schools and residents to promote respect and awareness
• Make sure residents’ voices are heard by decision-makers
• Support action that builds care and consideration in our neighbourhood
• Gather and share evidence of unsafe behaviour with the relevant authorities

🚲 St Albans Bike Bus – Friday Morning Reminder 🚲

Hi everyone, just a quick note to say the Bike Bus in New Greens will be rolling tomorrow between 8:00 and 8:30am 🌟

We’d love your support in keeping the ride safe and stress-free for all:
✅ Please give the cyclists a little extra room
✅ Allow a few extra minutes for your car journey
✅ And if you see riders signalling right at a junction, please hold back rather than overtaking

A little patience makes a big difference and helps keep our young riders safe. Thank you for looking out for them – it means a lot to the whole community 💚

Join us at 8am at Toulmin Dr by the small playground Fridays in term time. Or join the Bike Bus Facebook group and you can follow us on a tracker and join us on route. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61569215790496

🚸 New Greens Safer Streets in action 🚸

This week the street sign for Toulmin Drive was left lying on the ground for a couple of days. It wasn’t fixed by Hertfordshire County Council or the District Council — so one of our members stepped in and secured it temporarily. Hopefully the council will now make the repair permanent.

This is what our campaign is about: having pride in our area and taking action when things are unsafe or neglected. If an area looks uncared for some drivers will be less respectful to our community.

We’re pushing for:
• Lower speed limits and safer pedestrian crossings 🚶
- ensuring warning signs are not blocked by trees endangering children
• Replacement of lampposts when they’re removed 💡
• Better, safer parking 🅿️
• Slower driving through residential streets 🚗
• An end to New Greens being used as a rat run ❌

These are the things that affect our safety every single day.

👉 Our next meeting is Sunday at 4pm at Christ Church. If you care about safer streets in New Greens, please come along and add your voice.

Together we can make our community safer, less polluted and prouder. 💪

Please, please make all parents & carers with children at schools in New Greens aware of this Herts travel survey. It is only being publicised directly through schools. This is from Garden Fields’ newsletter to parents today.

This has come as a result of New Greens Safer Streets Campaign and campaigner Damian Gaskin ‘s petition for pedestrian crossings one year ago.

We’re really pleased to share that, after raising the issue, we had the overgrown tree cut back by Highways.

You can now clearly see the warning lights and sign that alert drivers to children crossing Townsend Drive on their way to the local schools.

A small change, but one that makes a big difference to children’s safety every day.

Join our campaign for safer streets in New Greens.

The next New Greens Safer Streets Residents’ Meeting is Sunday 21st September at 4pm. Venue Christ Church.

We will ;-

Give an update on what’s happened including appreciating all the evidence collected todate,

ask for your input into questions for a future meeting the committee is scheduling with councillors,

and seek to form working groups to focus on specific projects or evidence gathering.

Hope to see you there !

🛑 Safer Streets Need Clear Answers – Not Closed Cases 🛑

Last Thursday, 24 July, a lamppost at a dangerous T-junction on Toulmin Drive fell—possibly struck by a vehicle. One of our New Greens Safer Streets Campaign members reported it immediately and opted in to the County Council’s tracking system.

By Monday morning 28 July, the lamppost had been quietly removed and the hole filled in, with no explanation. The council’s system simply says ‘action taken to make safe and case closed’. No plan for replacement. Case CLOSED.

This is a dark junction, and removing lighting from a spot that already poses risks feels both reckless and disrespectful to a community that works tirelessly for cleaner, safer streets.

We’ve now written to the County Council to ask:
• Is the lamppost being replaced?
• Why are residents left in the dark—literally and figuratively—when a case is closed?
• Why is there no transparency on the tracking platform?

We hope this isn’t a case of removing infrastructure under cover of a “repair.”

The New Greens’ Community does its bit—

-week after week, the Saturday Pickers have picked up litter for over two years
-our own Campaign for Safer Streets is raising concerns of reckless driving, speeding and dangerous parking,
-the 144 Mondays of community meals at the church serving 130 people a week.

Is it too much to ask that the Council communicates clearly and treats us with a little respect?

We’ll keep you updated—but once again, it’s up to us to fill in the gaps.

Update-
‘Highways customer service writes -The Column was removed and the location it was placed in was filled in for safety reasons. We are currently working on putting together the necessary plans and arranging the appropriate traffic management to ensure the work can be carried out safely and efficiently. The lamp column is with the design team, who will plan the necessary works before handing it over to the operations team for replacement arrangements.
While I am unable to provide a specific timeframe at this stage, please be assured that the replacement will be treated as a priority and carried out as soon as practicable.’

New Greens Safer Streets Campaign are grateful for the update but suggest the Council’s tracking system does not say ‘case closed’ if it is not and shows appropriate information such as ‘A replacement lamppost will be installed soon’
