Hello – Welcome to the official page of No.220 (St Albans) Squadron Air Training Corps. The Air Training Corps (ATC) is a major national youth organisation, affiliated to the Royal Air Force, with more than 900 units across the UK. We are the unit serving St Albans and the surrounding area and currently we have more than 60 cadets, aged from 12-19. The ATC operates in communities alongside the Combined Cadet Force (RAF Section) which operates in schools. Collectively we form the Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC) which is commanded by a senior Royal Air Force officer and has its headquarters at Royal Air Force College Cranwell. Our squadron is part of Hertfordshire Wing ATC and we often take part in competitions, activities and events with members of our fellow Squadrons across the area. No.220 (St Albans) Squadron boasts a proud history, having been part of the city since 1941 – but whilst our past is important to us, it’s the future that matters most. DAY 4: CADETS SAVE LIVES ❤️‍🩹

Cadet organisations are among the biggest providers of first aid training to young people in the country, teaching skills that have saved lives and will keep saving them. In the Air Cadets, cadets progress through Blue, Bronze and Silver levels, building deeper knowledge and more advanced skills as they go, before reaching Gold, where they learn to teach those skills to others.

Today, we’re pushing to get as many of our cadets qualified as possible, because first aid is a skill that stays with you for life. Tonight, the whole squadron is training together.

DAY 3: CFAV RECOGNITION DAY 👏

This organisation couldn’t run without the adult volunteers who give their time, skills and enthusiasm to deliver every part of the Air Cadet experience. Many of our staff are ex-cadets themselves, and now they’re giving back what they once received.

At 220, we have diverse range of “day jobs”, all of which compliment the cadet delivery- Border Force, Civil Servant, Police Officer, Sales Managers, Students, Project Managers, Paramedic and an IT Software engineer

Our volunteers are the backbone of the residential camps cadets can attend. Wing, region, national or international, from drill and ceremonial to fieldcraft and music, and everything in between, these camps are a highlight for everyone involved. ⛺

DAY 2: CADETS & COMMUNITIES 🤝

At 220, we work with our local community throughout the year, most often through our drill and ceremonial team. Representing ourselves, the RAFAC and, by extension, the RAF at events like Armed Forces Day and Remembrance teaches our cadets to take pride in themselves and their squadron, and to work as a team to deliver an outstanding performance every time.

It’s a small way of giving something back to the community that supports us. 🇬🇧

✈️ NATIONAL CADET WEEK 2026 | DAY 1: LAUNCH DAY ✈️

This week, we’re celebrating cadet organisations across the country and everything they offer. From all of us at 220, we want to show off the incredible opportunities available to our cadets and staff, and recognise the fantastic people who make it happen. Every day, we’ll look at a different part of the RAFAC and why it matters.

We’re launching National Cadet Week the only way we know how: flying and gliding. 🛫 Within the RAFAC, cadets can fly both gliders and powered aircraft at every age and stage of their cadet career, and can go on to fly solo and even earn their wings. For many, it’s the moment they’ll never forget.

🏆 VAMPIRE TROPHY WINNERS 🏆

Tonight the squadron did its presentation evening for being awarded the Vampire Trophy.

The Vampire trophy is awarded to the most efficient Squadron in Hertfordshire Wing.

The trophy is a reflection of the hard work of the Cadets, the Civilian Committee and the staff. Countless weekend courses, hours of unseen work, residential camps and the regular two nights a week parade evenings

There were three surprise presentations

- Cadet Forces Warrant Scroll to our OC, Warrant Officer Birch
- Certificate of appointment to our SNCO, Sergeant Carins
- Wing Commanders Award to our civilian committee which was accepted by our committee chairperson

A fantastic night, which had our 26 new cadets in attendance also to inspire them on their third parade night with us
