Emmaus Hertfordshire

Emmaus Hertfordshire We provide formerly homeless people with a home for as long as is needed, access to meaningful work opportunities, training & support.

A homeless charity, based in Hill End Lane, St Albans, provides a home for as long as is needed to 38 formerly homeless men and women (our "companions"). Our shops in St Albans, Hemel Hempstead and Tring sell donated high-quality furniture, homewares, accessories and more, and the income generated helps to support the work we do. We also sell online on eBay and Facebook, and run a successful house

clearance business. Many of the people working in our shops are the people who are receiving support from us. Working in a friendly, supportive environment helps them to regain some of their self-esteem while helping them to gain valuable work experience. Our companions all live together in our community house in Hill End, St Albans.

We have space available at Emmaus Hertfordshire 💚

We provide more than a bed for the night. Our community offers a home, tailored support, meaningful work opportunities and the chance to build confidence, stability and independence after homelessness.

Living alongside others in a supportive communal environment, our residents have the time and space to regain control of their lives and work towards a more positive future, just like Dinesh, pictured, who has personalised his room and made it into a stylish and cosy space.

With people recently moving on from our community, we’re now able to welcome new residents who could benefit from our support.

If you know someone who is homeless or at risk of homelessness, please encourage them to find out more about Emmaus Hertfordshire and the support we offer.

In case you missed it 🎙️

Our Chief Executive, Duncan Lewis, was interviewed on BBC Three Counties Radio and BBC Radio Northamptonshire following Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s announcement on tackling homelessness yesterday.

Duncan welcomed the focus on homelessness, saying:

“It’s great to see a Prime Minister putting homelessness so high on their agenda. There’s lots to be pleased about. Getting people off the streets is a great first step, but if they’re going to recover their independence and move into their own homes, that’s a longer and more complex journey, so there is still much that needs to be done.”

Listen to Duncan’s interview on yesterday afternoon's Kady Braine show on BBC Three Counties Radio from 03:13 on BBC Sounds here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002zzz9

🎙️ Tune in! 🎙️

Our Chief Executive, Duncan Lewis, will be discussing today’s Government announcement on ending rough sleeping this winter on and BBC Northamptonshire at around 5.10pm.

We welcome Andy Burnham’s plan to ensure every rough sleeper has somewhere safe to stay this winter. We also welcome recognition of the vital role that charities like us and the wider third sector play in ending homelessness for good.

At Emmaus Hertfordshire, we empower people to overcome homelessness for good by providing the foundation of a home and life-changing, tailored support. Ultimately, the goal must be to help people move into independent, affordable housing and away from homelessness for good.

We welcome this important step - but getting everyone home for good must be the goal.

📻 Tune in at around 5.10pm!

Emmaus Hertfordshire was proud to sign a joint letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, urging him to push ahead with a pledge to deliver a national housing first philosophy.

We joined over 75 other homelessness support and prevention organisations in signing a letter coordinated by Homeless Link.

Each one of us stand ready to work with the Government to build a housing system around dignity, choice and what people need to thrive across the whole country.

A huge thank you to the incredible team from for helping restore an important part of our community.

After our shed was damaged by fire last year, VIY's amazing young volunteers completely rebuilt it from the ground up, constructing a new timber frame and fitting a brand-new roof to ensure it's weatherproof for years to come.

VIY (Volunteer It Yourself) empowers young people aged 14–24 to learn valuable trade skills by repairing and refurbishing community spaces, working alongside professional tradespeople and gaining recognised qualifications along the way. It's a brilliant model that creates lasting benefits for both the young people involved and the communities they support.

We're also incredibly grateful to construction company Morgan Sindall, who generously donated all the building materials needed for the project.

Thank you to everyone at VIY and Morgan Sindall for your generosity, hard work and commitment to making a real difference. Your support has helped create something that will benefit our community for many years to come. 💚

A HUGE thank you to a fantastic team of volunteers from the Hertfordshire Infrastructure & Development Board (HIDB), who recently spent the day helping to transform our outdoor spaces.

The team cleared our yard, enabling us to fully utilise the space, whilst also making it a more welcoming sight for companions, staff and visitors alike. 🌿

HIDB brings together local authorities and partners from the development and construction sector to support sustainable growth across Hertfordshire, and we're incredibly grateful that they chose to spend time giving back to our community.

Volunteer days like this make a real difference, helping us maintain a safe, welcoming environment where our companions can live, work and thrive.

Thank you to everyone from HIDB who rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in – your hard work and generosity are truly appreciated! Thanks also to Meeting Place for organising this successful volunteering day.💚
