Emmaus Hertfordshire

Emmaus Hertfordshire We provide formerly homeless people with a home for as long as is needed, access to meaningful work opportunities, training & support.

A homeless charity, based in Hill End Lane, St Albans, provides a home for as long as is needed to 38 formerly homeless men and women (our "companions"). Our shops in St Albans, Hemel Hempstead and Tring sell donated high-quality furniture, homewares, accessories and more, and the income generated helps to support the work we do. We also sell online on eBay and Facebook, and run a successful house

clearance business. Many of the people working in our shops are the people who are receiving support from us. Working in a friendly, supportive environment helps them to regain some of their self-esteem while helping them to gain valuable work experience. Our companions all live together in our community house in Hill End, St Albans.

🌟Volunteers' Week 2026: A Huge Thank You to Ashtons Estate Agents!🌟

We were delighted to welcome a team of a group of volunteers from Ashtons Estate Agents during Volunteers' Week 2026.

The team spent the day at our St Albans community and charity shop, rolling up their sleeves to help with a wide range of tasks including sorting and displaying donations, tidying our shops and community spaces, improving displays and creating two amazing upcycled pieces of furniture in our workshop.

Their hard work and enthusiasm made a real difference, helping us improve our facilities and maximise the value of donations that support people who have experienced homelessness.

A big thank you to everyone from Ashtons who took part and helped make such a positive impact in just one day. 👏

We're always looking for more volunteers to support our charity shops, gardening projects, fundraising, events and community activities. If you'd like to make a difference and help people rebuild their lives after homelessness, we'd love to hear from you.

💚 Happy Volunteers' Week 2026! 💚

This week, we're celebrating and thanking all of the incredible volunteers, past and present, who have given their time, energy and skills to support Emmaus Hertfordshire.

From helping to maintain and improve our premises, serving customers in our shops, keeping our gardens flourishing and sorting, pricing and displaying stock, our volunteers play a vital role in everything we do. 🌿🛠️🛍️☕

Quite simply, we couldn't do it without you.

Our volunteers give so much to our organisation, and without their dedication, generosity and hard work, we wouldn't be able to support the people we do or achieve all that we do across our community.

A special thank you to Kate, Steve, Lyn and Siouxsie, who are pictured here, and to every single volunteer who has been part of the Emmaus Hertfordshire family over the years. Your contribution makes a real difference every day, and we are incredibly grateful.

Thank you for all that you do. 💚

Thanks to everyone who joined us on Sunday at the St Albans Spring Festival! 🌸

Our shop manager, Graham (pictured), hosted a stand near our St Peter’s Street shop in St Albans city centre as part of this fantastic community event.

Graham spoke to visitors about Emmaus Hertfordshire and how we support people who have experienced homelessness to rebuild their lives. He also had a lovely selection of preloved, handmade and upcycled items for sale.

It was wonderful to meet so many people throughout the day - thank you for stopping by to say hello to Graham! Our shop was also full of beautiful finds on Sunday, as you can see from the photos.

The festival was a brilliant day out for all ages, with live music, arts and crafts, street performers, food stalls and much more.

We’re proud to be part of A Million Acts of Hope – a national campaign celebrating the everyday acts of kindness, care and connection happening across the UK. 💚

At a time when division can feel loud, this campaign is about shining a light on the people and communities quietly supporting one another every day and bringing people from all backgrounds and walks of life together.

At Emmaus Hertfordshire, we see acts of hope every day. Companions, volunteers, staff, supporters and local communities coming together with a shared mission to end homelessness one person at a time - creating strong, caring communities where everyone feels they belong.

All of our vital work just wouldn't be possible without the incredible partnerships we have with organisations like HACRO, Herts for Refugees, Recover Team, Open Door, CGL (Change Grow Live), to name just a few. All are experts in their fields and provide invaluable support to our charity and the people we support every day. We’re incredibly thankful for the continued support of all our partners whose collaboration and teamwork is helping us create lasting change together.
