Emmaus Hertfordshire We provide formerly homeless people with a home for as long as is needed, access to meaningful work opportunities, training & support.

A homeless charity, based in Hill End Lane, St Albans, provides a home for as long as is needed to 38 formerly homeless men and women (our "companions"). Our shops in St Albans, Hemel Hempstead and Tring sell donated high-quality furniture, homewares, accessories and more, and the income generated helps to support the work we do. We also sell online on eBay and Facebook, and run a successful house clearance business. Many of the people working in our shops are the people who are receiving support from us. Working in a friendly, supportive environment helps them to regain some of their self-esteem while helping them to gain valuable work experience. Our companions all live together in our community house in Hill End, St Albans.

A huge thank you to CRASH Charity for organising a fantastic team of volunteers from Glencar Construction who worked so hard for us last week, clearing a large area of our storage building!

The Glencar team generously gave their time and energy to clear and recycle unwanted items, creating much-needed usable space for us. A huge thank you to Chloe Prendergast, John O'Grady, Richard Walford, Carly Girolami, Denise Southard, Will Parsons, Ronnie Bennett and Martyn Fenner for their enthusiasm and commitment. Thank you also to Powerday who kindly donated the skips needed. We’re so grateful to all of you for your amazing support!

We were also delighted to welcome Trisha Pickersgill, Chief Executive of CRASH, and John O’Grady, Chair of Trustees and Group Strategic Director at Glencar, to our community for the corporate volunteering day.

A massive thank you to CRASH and its partner organisations for supporting us over the past few years, helping with everything from roof, window and lighting upgrades to new radiators and so much more. Your generosity and support make a real difference and help us continue our vital work.

Corporate volunteering days like these show just how much can be achieved when organisations come together to support our charity and make a positive difference to our community. 🙏💚 👏

From devastating grief and addiction to achieving his HGV licence, securing a new job and looking towards a brighter, more independent future - Steve’s journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when someone gets the right support, stability and companionship.

Since joining Emmaus Hertfordshire, Steve has worked incredibly hard to rebuild his life, find renewed purpose and look ahead with hope. We couldn’t be prouder of everything he has achieved. 💚

His story highlights why our work matters and why support for people experiencing homelessness is so important. At Emmaus Hertfordshire, we believe everyone deserves the chance to rebuild their life and create a more positive future.

🚛 From homelessness to becoming a fully qualified HGV driver - Steve’s story is one of loss, recovery, resilience and hope. 💛

This we’re sharing Steve’s journey and showing what can happen when someone is given the support, stability and opportunities they need to rebuild their life.

After losing his wife in 2015, and one of his sons five years later, Steve struggled to cope with grief. Alcohol became his way of dealing with the pain, leading to addiction, repeated detoxes and stays in psychiatric units.

When Steve arrived at Emmaus Hertfordshire , things began to change. The structure and routine of community life gave Steve a renewed sense of purpose.

With the support of his support worker, Anne Marie, he also began to understand that recovery wasn’t simply about stopping drinking - it was about learning to face and process his grief and emotions too.

Then came an opportunity that helped Steve look towards a different future.

🚛 Emmaus supported Steve to complete his HGV training. He is now fully qualified and working as an HGV driver.

His journey shows why our support goes far beyond providing a place to live. It’s about creating the stability, community, practical support and opportunities that enable people to regain independence and build a brighter future.

Here at our St Albans community, we love a cup of tea and we love, love, LOVE a biscuit. So we can't thank Rhythm 108 enough for sending us a donation of their Almond Biscotti and Coconut Crunch biscuits. We're obsessed.
We know there's work to be done but honestly, us, the sofa, a cuppa, a pooch and a steady supply of these? Work... maybe later.
