🏛️ 🏆 The St Albans Civic Society Awards 2026 are open for entries!

🏡 Does your street look a little better than it did two years ago? A beautiful restoration, a clever new build, a reimagined green space — even a perfectly rebuilt wall? 🌳

👂We want to hear about it.

🎖️ Our annual Awards celebrate the best of design, development and craftsmanship completed across St Albans in 2024 and 2025 — from entire housing schemes to a lovingly restored archway. The special Trevelyan Award will go to an outstanding conservation project.

Today, we helped mark the donation and planting of three replacement cherry trees along the Cherry Tree Walk in St Peter's churchyard.

🌳 The trees are a gift from the Sakura Project - symbols of cultural exchange and friendship. 🤗

🔔 And we are OPEN! The new St Albans Clock Tower season is under way, meaning spring is officially here 🌸

🔑 Here is Teresa Heritage opening the tower to visitors today, Good Friday.

🔔 Come and visit the only surviving medieval town belfry in England, every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays: 10.30am - 5pm.

🤝 Better still join the Civic Society and become a “Clockateer” - volunteers from the Society and St Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural & Archaeological Society who keep the tower open and the visitors smiling. 😊

🌿 Palm Sunday celebrated today in St Albans, against a backdrop of the Clock Tower.

Ancient ritual, familiar streets. Christians have marked this day — the start of Holy Week — for two millennia, remembering Jesus’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey.

🚫 OBJECTION: Oaklands College / Smallford development 🚫

“Urban sprawl, with the likely result that there is merger between St Albans and Hatfield"

🛑 The Civic Society OBJECTS to construction of 167 new homes , a new local centre, new college buildings and facilities at Oaklands College and land to south of Sandpit Lane. 🛑

WHY?

🌳 🌲 The proposed dwellings are ON GREEN BELT LAND and it is difficult to see what exceptional circumstances there are to override the protection

🏙️ This represents URBAN SPRAWL with the likely result that there is merger between St Albans and Hatfield

🚷 Local infrastructure will NOT SUPPORT this level of development and it is too far to walk to existing facilities.
