A busy week out and about, meeting parent carers and hearing about their experiences of Herts SEND services. HPCI has also been meeting with the SEND local partnership this week to discuss how they are planning to deliver better professional support (SLTs, OTs, educational psychologists etc.) to schools, the development of their carers strategy and more.

If your young person is in year 11 you might be interested in one of these sessions...

We are running 'Get September Ready’ sessions throughout the summer to help Year 11 students feel more confident and prepared for their next steps after school.

Whether they are going into sixth form, college or don’t currently have anything in place for September, they can get individualised support from qualified SfYP Advisers.

The free informal sessions are particularly beneficial for young people who have been out of education, are home-educated, or have special educational needs and disabilities, including those with social, emotional and mental health needs.

HPCI visited Tesco HQ today to chat to staff about their experiences as carers. It was great to meet so many people and to hear about the parent carer support group that Tesco has. If you know of any events for parent carers in Hertfordshire, we'd love to hear about it.

09/06/2026

We asked our members if they had questions for HCC about the proposals for future specialist provision in Hertfordshire. There will be videos across this week with the answers to your questions. And if you want to put in response to the consultation, you can find out how to do that here: https://bit.ly/4vD8sHQ

🌟 We’re Recruiting: Chair of the Board (Voluntary Role) 🌟

Herts Parent Carer Involvement (HPCI) is looking for an inspiring, values‑led Chair to guide our Board and champion the voices of SEND families across Hertfordshire.

If you’re an experienced leader who believes in strong governance, inclusive decision‑making and making a real difference for our community, we’d love to hear from you.

It was great to meet parent carers at the DSPL8 info fayre in Hemel this week. We heard feedback about accessing autism assessments, difficulties with therapies and concerns about support for children in the classroom. If you haven't taken a look yet, you can read HPCI's guide for parents about "ordinarily available provision" and how to start a conversation with your child's school: https://bit.ly/43btFwn

Last month, Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) agreed changes to its home-to-school and college transport policy for 16–18 year olds. This means that for most young people, Personal Travel Budgets (PTBs) will now be the main form of support offered. This decision was made even though, in the council’s consultation, only 27% of respondents said they would be happy to accept a PTB, while a further 19% were unsure.

HPCI has written to the Leader of the Council and the councillor responsible for SEND to share our concerns about this decision. We remain worried about safety, the extra pressure this could place on families, and the risk that the changes could have the greatest impact on the most vulnerable young people. We will continue to monitor how this is introduced, and would like to hear from you if your family is affected.

In the meantime, you might want to be aware of this petition, which calls on the government to reinstate Post 16 transport for disabled young adults.

Reinstate Post 16 transport for disabled young adults. Personal Transport Budgets do not work for all families.
