Marshalswick Horticultural Society

Marshalswick Horticultural Society Welcome to the official page of the Marshalswick Horticultural Society. Promoting gardening and horticulture in the St Albans area. Everyone welcome.

The Marshalswick Horticultural Society, founded in 1957, has a membership of about 200 households, the majority of which live in Marshalswick, St Albans but some come from further afield. The main aim of the Society is the encouragement of horticulture in all ways – this includes evening talks, coach trips and open gardens. Activities of the Society include:
*six talks per year on a range of topic

s of horticultural interest, often with unusual plants for sale. These talk place on the first Monday of Feb, March Sept, Oct, Nov and December at the Baptist Church behind The Quadrant.
*an AGM with a plant sale and exchange and a draw for tickets for the Hampton Court Flower Show.
*two coach trips per year to gardens of great horticultural interest and, often, ones which are not normally open to the public
*a tea party in August for members to meet one another and chat in a private garden over tea and cakes
*a newsletter three to four times per year
*sales of mushroom compost in March at discounted prices
*occasional plant sales
*an opportunity for members to present a decorative arrangement to be judged at some of the talks

Summer visit is next week, we are off to visit the plant nursery of Moore & Moore in Essex. Lynne came along to talk to us about suitable plants for clay soils during the winter - so it will be great to see the nursery . Its a Chelsea Gold Medal winning, small, independent, family run nursery based in Billericay, Essex. They specialise in shade tolerant and woodland plants but also have a choice selection of plants which are a magnet for pollinating insects.
We are combining this with a visit to Barnards Farm who also happen to hold the National Malus collection.

Veg -Whilst we are all passionate about the shrubs in the garden, flowering annuals, roses and the lawn - dont forget the veg. You only need a small area to produce fresh salads. Or you could mix some veg in your borders as in the traditional French way. A potager garden, originating in France, is designed to be both productive and beautiful, blending edible plants with ornamental elements to create a harmonious outdoor space. Unlike traditional vegetable gardens with straight rows, potagers often feature geometrically shaped beds, compact layouts, and artistic arrangements that make the garden visually engaging while supplying fresh ingredients for the kitchen. The garden is typically located near the house for easy access and frequent harvesting. Give it a try !

Join the hunt for rare daffodils - With hundreds of different daffodils thought to be found in the UK, thee RHS are calling on you to log where daffodils are blooming in your area. They will ask some basic information such as colour, type and height. RHS scientists will use this information to help understand environmental influences on daffodils, buyer preferences and spread.

They are also calling for you to join the search for three specific daffodils that are either at risk or thought to be extinct in the UK. Locating these daffodils will help us aid their survival, better understand our gardening heritage, and even enable preservation of genetic material that could be valuable for future breeding of daffodils in the face of a changing climate. See the attached for more information.

We are mapping the UK's daffodils and trying to locate three rare varieties. Can you help? With hundreds of different daffodils thought to be found in the UK,...

Starlings on the lawn probably a sign of leather jackets. Despite last years hot summer I was convinced that any flying crane fly - Daddy long legs would struggle to lay their eggs, how wrong I was and I have an infested patch on my lawn. However its so wet they are close to the surface and with luck the starlings will devour them all for breakfast
