CYCLE PATH COPPICING WORKS
You may have noticed that trees and vegetation alongside the cycle path are being cut back. This work is called coppicing, a traditional woodland management technique that encourages healthy regrowth and supports wildlife.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
• Improve tree and hedge health • Encourage vigorous new growth • Improve visibility and safety • Increase biodiversity • Preserve the historic landscape
A HEDGEROW WITH HISTORY
This hedgerow is believed to have formed part of a historic drovers' way, used to move livestock through the countryside. Hedges such as this were traditionally coppiced many times over the centuries to keep them healthy, productive and open.
LONG OVERDUE MANAGEMENT
The hedge has not received traditional coppice management for many decades. We believe the last major works may have been carried out around the 2nd World War, when timber from managed woodland was commonly used for charcoal production.
Although the area may look dramatic today, new shoots will quickly emerge and the trees & hedgrow will regenerate. Thank you for your patience while we help preserve Greenwood Park for future generations. DON'T WORRY... THE TREES WILL GROW BACK!
