Tom's Trust

Tom's Trust Tom's Trust is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to providing psychological support to children with brain tumours and their families.

Tom's Trust is set up in memory of our beautiful son, Tom, who died of a brain tumour aged only 9, he was so brave and we are so proud of him. We raise money to fund Clinical Psychologists for children with brain tumours and their families to be there from the devastating point of diagnosis and help them through the tough operations and aggressive treatment necessary for these tumours and then aft

er treatment helping them back to their schools and their lives. If like Tom they do not survive we would like the psychologists to help the bereaved family for the first year. Psychology is under funded and needs more recognition as an essential help to the children and their families. Join us on our journey to provide Clinical Psychologists throughout the UK for this group of children. We are the only UK charity funding Clinical Psychology for children with brain tumours.

When Peter's son Luke was diagnosed with a brain tumour at 12 years old, Peter focused all his energy on supporting his family.

"The feeling of being strong for everyone was intense. I felt that if I broke down everyone else would as well."

Like many fathers, Peter put his own wellbeing last. While concentrating on Luke's treatment and recovery, he neglected his own health and later faced his own cancer diagnosis.

"While Luke’s situation wasn’t the cause [of the cancer], I think I may have missed some of the symptoms as a result of just concentrating on Luke."

This Men's Health Week, we're reminding dads and carers that looking after your own mental and physical health matters too.

"Speak to someone if you are really struggling - there is help available, and that help can give you strategies to manage how you are feeling."

For Men’s Health Week, Young Ambassador Faris is sharing the advice he would give other young men facing a brain tumour diagnosis: reach out and use the support around you.

Faris, 20, was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumour five years ago and underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, vinblastine and proton beam therapy. He received support from the Tom’s Trust psychology team at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and says having people to talk to made a huge difference during treatment and recovery.

“Having that communication with people definitely takes a lot of weight off your shoulders.”

Support looks different for everyone. It could be talking, texting, writing things down, or speaking to a charity like Tom’s Trust. No one should have to go through it alone.

A child's brain tumour diagnosis can affect every aspect of a parent's wellbeing.

When Andy's daughter Emily was diagnosed with a brain tumour, the emotional impact was immediate.

"I still remember the look on the doctor's face when he asked me and my wife, Sarah, to follow him to another room."

The trauma didn't just affect Andy's mental health. In the days and weeks that followed, he lost around two stone in weight and struggled to eat or sleep as his body remained in a constant state of high alert. Tragically, Emily died just 11 days after she was admitted to hospital.

"[My wife and I] remember saying to each other, 'this must be what true heartbreak really feels like'. It was crushing, a physical chest pain."

Following Emily's death, Andy and his family received support from a Tom's Trust clinical psychologist.

"Having a professional clinical psychologist listen and offer that validation is so important for me."

This Men's Health Week, we're recognising the impact that a childhood brain tumour can have on both mental and physical health. No parent or family should have to face it without support.

“Your head fills with all these doubts… honestly, that is not me as a person.”

This Men’s Health Week, Young Ambassador Faris is sharing the impact his brain tumour diagnosis had on his mental and physical wellbeing.

Faris was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumour at 15 and underwent multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, vinblastine and proton beam therapy. Alongside the physical impact of treatment, he experienced spiralling thoughts, loss of confidence, and difficulty finding the motivation to leave the house.

Faris received psychological support from the Tom’s Trust team at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, helping him navigate some of the emotional challenges that can come with a brain tumour diagnosis.

Mental and physical health are deeply connected, and no young person should face that impact alone.

Next weekend, we're holding our second Tom’s Trust Better Together Camp. ⭐

We’re taking 19 boys aged between nine and 14-years old, all living with a brain tumour, on a weekend full of friendship, adventure, and laughter. Having received treatment at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and the Great North Children’s Hospital, they'll spend the weekend connecting with others who understand their experience.

Children with brain tumours often struggle with making and keeping friendships due to missed school, cognitive challenges, and the lasting effects of treatment. As they grow, especially into adolescence, social connection becomes more important than ever. Boys are also less likely to verbalise loneliness or seek support. Emotional distress may instead present as behavioural issues, anxiety or withdrawal, increasing the risk of long-term mental health difficulties without targeted intervention.

Our Better Together camp is designed to support the children, helping boost self-esteem and build bonds that could last a lifetime. We will share more from the camp afterwards!

We are incredibly grateful to the The National Lottery Community Fund, Ascot Underwriters, RenRe and our other amazing donors for enabling this to happen. 💙

We’re so pleased to see this focus on the whole family and on creating hospital environments that support children, parents, siblings and carers at every stage of their journey.

At Tom’s Trust, we know how vital this approach is when a child is diagnosed with a brain tumour. It’s great to see this reflected so clearly in the design of Cambridge Children’s Hospital.

After a brain tumour diagnosis, many children and young people experience separation anxiety – and parents often feel it too.

Our new free resource for parents explains why separation anxiety happens, what it can look like, and practical ways to help your child rebuild confidence and feel safe.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re also thanking the trustees who volunteer their time and expertise to help shape the future of Tom’s Trust.

Anil Malhotra, one of our trustees, shared:

“Tom’s Trust is ambitious and resolute. We have built a process for providing psychological care at a time of great need in people’s lives and set ourselves the task of making that care available to anyone in the UK when they most need it. This is an exciting, challenging and vital mission to be part of, with a hugely talented team and dedicated supporters across the country”.

We’re so grateful for the commitment and insight our trustees bring to our mission.
