A lesson today to always prepare for the worst. Today’s race was forecast for acceptable weather conditions but out of the blue a squall hit Rye Bay, every dinghy capsized at least once (one six times), with one ending up on Camber Beach. The safety boat was working overtime and the race was abandoned. The photograph shows Peter Joyce being towed ‘back from the brink’ by Paul Whiteman arriving at the club house.

All returned safely - with stories for the bar.

Rye Harbour Sailing Club deliberately sets its fees at a low level to encourage people from all walks of life to sail. This means that we look to fund raising initiatives to ensure that we can maintain the facilities (infrastructure, safety equipment and club boats are examples). For this reason, the club subscribes to Sterling Lotteries and is licenced by Rother District Council to run a lottery. Tickets cost £1 a week of which 50p comes to the club. The maximum prize available is £25,000.

The club is situated on the River Rother adjacent to Rye Bay where excellent sailing is enjoyed all year round. We are an inclusive club welcoming all who want to have a go at sailing whether on yachts or dinghies; experienced or beginner.

We have active dinghy and cruising divisions and year-round events; sailing and social. The club prides itself on the diversity of its members and sailing interests, catering for all ages and abilities. The club is one where new and prospective members alike receive a warm welcome.

For less than the price of a cup of coffee you can buy four tickets a month whilst supporting a grass roots sailing organisation. More detail can be found at this link.

Today’s race started on the River Rother before heading out to Rye Bay. This photograph by Clive Heathmarsh captured the start. Despite forecast light winds we were gusting at up to 25 kts and the initial moderate swell became very heavy. Three boats did not finish the race which was won by Mark & David Whiteman.

Ian Hayward has started 'to do Britain by Kayak - 2026': a solo, (mostly) unsupported sea kayak journey around mainland Britain. It is a 4000km journey that could take many months for him to complete, largely dictated by body, mind and weather!

He will be attempting to raise funds for two charities along the way: Surfers Against Sewage, as he is appalled about how our coastal and inland waters have been neglected and wilfully polluted over the years and Movember, because of the terrific work they do to combat prostate and testicular cancer and support men's mental health and su***de prevention.

Ian recently stopped over at Rye Harbour Sailing Club being greeted by Committee member Jeremy Short (see photos).

Ian's progress can be followed at https://share.garmin.com/GooseJuiceLiveTracking

More information about the project can be found here: www.goosejuice.co.uk or .

If you want to donate to either charity, his fundraising link is here: https://www.goosejuice.co.uk/pages/fundraising/

The Commodore’s Regatta, held by the Cruisers on 2, 3 & 4 May, was a great success this Bank Holiday weekend. There was a good turnout and a variety of conditions to deal with. The final day saw a 'winner takes all' situation for three of the competitors on the final day.

The trophy went to Simon Joynson skipper of Valkyrie , presented by our Commodore, Peter Joyce at the newly refurbished clubhouse (see photo - Peter left, Simon right).

There will be a new name on the trophy list, well done to Simon and his crew.

The results of each race are now on the RHSC website here: https://rhsc.org.uk/results-demo/

Despite reasonable winds, yesterday’s race (3 May) had to be held on the River Rother because of a sea fog in Rye Bay. Another fun race with the bar open afterwards. Photographs by Paul Whiteman.

Last Sunday we managed to sail in Rye Bay for the first time in a while. Winds were variable but on the light side, nevertheless, it was a fun race (pictures by Simon Marsh who ran the race).

At last! Some decent wind after weeks of very light winds. This time the pendulum swung to the opposite side with forecast gusts of 30kts. This meant a river race (and we are fortunate we can use the River Rother when Rye Bay is too dangerous to sail in). Photographs by Officer of the Day and Club President Mark Whiteman. For a bit of fun, the last picture is an AI interpretation of one of the pictures as an ‘action painting’. 😃

This time of year sees some contrary wind conditions. Often is it too windy to sail at sea safely and we use the River Rother or, like this weekend (22 March) there is no wind at all. That said a good number turned up in the hope of sailing alongside Hastings Rowing Club (who of course did get out on the water along with a couple of cruisers).

Talk about dedication. Thanks to Andrew and Mary Hewitt for running today’s race (22 Feb) which had to be held on the River Rother due to the blustery conditions.
