SGA (UK) is a non denominational, conservative evangelical Missionary Agency that serves and equips Christians in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Slavic Gospel Association is committed to working in partnership with local churches across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, helping them to address the particular challenges of building the Church of Jesus Christ in former Communist lands. This includes leadership training programmes, ongoing help for those in ministry, support for the translation and production of Christian literature and the provision of humanitarian aid.

The need for solid Biblical training remains as urgent as ever.

We and our national partners believe those who serve in the church and seek to reach others with the Gospel must be firmly grounded in Scripture. For this reason, our Biblical training programmes are not focused simply on academic knowledge or earning a recognised diploma. Rather, they are intended to shape servants of Christ whose thinking, character and ministries are rooted in the Word of God.

Our conviction is clear; the Bible must be central to all Christian ministry. Therefore, training Gospel workers remains a core ministry of SGA as we seek to strengthen the Church through well-prepared, Biblically equipped workers.

Earlier this year 26 students gathered to begin their studies at the Mission School in Balti, Moldova. Each enrolled with a clear purpose to be better equipped for faithful, Christ-centred ministry. As they continue their two years of study, we pray that each one will be prepared for the work God has called them to.

Camp ministry is a fruitful means of sharing the Gospel message with boys and girls. Through the support of SGA many camps will be conducted across Europe and Asia over the coming months. At these Residential & Day Camps local churches will be enabled to reach thousands of children and young people with the message of Salvation.

On Saturday (23 May) the Light of the Gospel Baptist Church in Balakleia, Ukraine, was struck by a Russian drone, causing a massive fire in the church building. Thankfully, there were no casualties, but the building was destroyed and can no longer be used as a place of worship.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the town was under Russian occupation, and the pastor of the congregation, Oleksandr Salfetnikov, was abducted and tortured by the occupying forces for being an evangelical minister — a “foreign spy.” Eventually, Pastor Oleksandr was released, but he suffered severe injuries.

Nevertheless, the church community continued providing humanitarian aid to the remaining local residents, while church volunteers helped others flee to territories controlled by the Ukrainian army. After the de-occupation, the church continued serving as a humanitarian relief centre, offering both practical help and the Light of the Gospel.

Continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, that God would comfort their hearts and strengthen their spirits, for the Light of the Gospel cannot be extinguished.

Mikhail Medvedev came to faith in Christ during a stay at a rehabilitation centre due to his alcohol addiction. He was ordained as a pastor 11 years later and currently assists in serving a Baptist church in Irkutsk, Russia.

Recently, Mikhail and his wife were asked by the church leadership to begin a children’s work in the village of Bolshoi Lug, where several of their members live, with the goal of establishing a new church within five years.

Along with his pastoral and church planting work Mikhail is also a director of camp ministries. Last summer their church held two camps with 170 children attending and preparations are well under way for this year’s camps.

Several years ago, the senior pastor asked Mikhail to join a team travelling to Mongolia with the aim of helping local churches establish their own camp ministry. Now in its 8th year, this partnership continues with teams from Russia and Mongolia travelling to help each other share the Gospel with boys and girls at summer camps.

Mikhail is helped by SGA through its Leadership Support programme, enabling him in his Gospel ministry.

During a recent visit to Armenia, SGA staff were encouraged to hear how greatly the Family Bible project has been appreciated. These Bibles, provided through the support of SGA, are being used in various ministries for the advancement of the Gospel.

What makes their distribution particularly effective is the combination of printed Bibles with QR codes. While physical copies are limited, a single Bible placed in one home can ripple outward through an entire social network, giving every relative, friend, and neighbour access to Scripture on their own device.

The demand for them is illustrated in the ministry of Hasmik, a lady deeply involved in personal evangelism. As she distributed Bible story books in local markets she found that unbelieving families were genuinely moved by what they read. Rather than politely accepting a copy and moving on, families asked for additional copies. She soon discovered that these were not for themselves, but for relatives living in Russia.

May the entrance of God’s Word bring light and life to many in Armenia and beyond.

KEEP PRAYING FOR UKRAINE

Gospel partner and long-time friend of SGA, Igor Bandura, gave an update recently of the situation in Ukraine. As he shared with us some statistics it was a stark reminder of the plight of the Ukrainian people.

He reported that in April alone, Russia carried out more than 371,000 strikes against Ukraine. Behind this staggering number there are hundreds of homes, hospitals, schools, and even churches damaged or destroyed.

But even more horrific is the mounting loss of life. In the first four months of this year, 780 civilians were killed and over 4,300 were injured. Igor recons that these numbers are probably much higher.

Yet, in the midst of all this death and destruction the work of the Gospel is still going on. The Church in Ukraine is continuing to reach out in practical Christian love and share a message of Hope where there seems to be none. Many are trusting Christ, new churches are being established, and broken hearts are being healed.

Igor says, “More and more we just feel we still can trust God, even without answers… Churches continue to minister, pray, rely on God. So we are moving forward”.

KEEP PRAYING FOR UKRAINE

Ervin Mittleman serves as a pastor in the second largest city of Slovakia. 240,000 people live in Košice, but evangelicals only make up 0.4% of the population.

The Mozaika church started with only 5 people. Today they are a church family of around 65 people, including children.

Nearly all of them are first-generation Christians. This is very significant for the church as most people will have no real experience with Christian parenting, Biblical manhood and womanhood, discipleship, or a life of worship or following Christ.

Yet, by God’s grace, through their various discipleship groups they are seeking to fulfil their vision – ‘Together we are building worshippers of God and disciples of Christ’.

One member said, “I can see how the church is helping me see Christ more clearly in my life. I understand more what it means to depend on Christ. I am spending more time with Him, and I am learning to love my wife and children more with God’s love.”

As an SGA sponsored pastor, Ervin values the partnership that enables him in this Gospel work.

Hope Centres continue to be a real blessing.

Helping to serve their community and its needs, yet all the while presenting the Hope of the Gospel.

One such centre is situated in the south of Moldova, in the village of Valea-Perjei, run by SGA sponsored missionary Dmitri Gotishan.

He writes “Every day after school, 30–35 children come to the Hope Centre. Staff and volunteers help them with homework, offer a warm meal, organise games, teach them how to cook, repair bicycles, and work on wood-burning crafts. Twice a week we conduct Bible lessons. The children sing songs and pray before meals and at the end of each day.

We rejoice seeing how their hearts change, how their speech softens, and how their values grow.”

Many of these children are from very difficult family situations and need the support and love that the Hope Centre provides.

Pray for Dmitri and the work of the centre as they minister into the lives of these children and others.

Spreading the Gospel through playgrounds.

Together with its partners, SGA is supporting the construction of bright, strong, and child-friendly playgrounds in Central Asia, through which the Gospel can be shared.

Many neighbourhoods still have old Soviet-era playgrounds that are worn out and often pose a risk of injury. For children, these are hardly real playgrounds.

Where churches have built new playgrounds something remarkable happens. Children come to play—and with them come their mothers, fathers, grandmothers, and grandfathers. These spaces quickly become gathering places for families and the wider community.

This has opened up a new opportunity for evangelism. The local church acknowledges that playgrounds can both serve the children and create natural meeting places where Christians can connect with parents and families. Through these conversations, relationships grow, and the hope of the Gospel is being shared.

Pray that both young and old will not only hear the Gospel but trust Christ as their Saviour.
