Ben Lomond NTS

Ben Lomond NTS Most people know that Ben Lomond is one of the post popular hill walks in Scotland. But did you also know that it is managed by the National Trust for Scotland?

The National Trust for Scotland Ben Lomond Ranger Service carries out upland path repair, and other conservation work on Ben Lomond, to look after the landscape, wildlife and habitats of the mountain. The ranger service is based at Ardess Lodge, 600m north of the Ben Lomond car park at Rowardennan where we've also got the Ben Lomond Bunkhouse. We do a variety of work on the hill, including: path r

epair and maintenance; vegetation monitoring to guide grazing management; fencing work to give woodland regeneration a chance; guided walks and activities, and lots of other stuff. We also get a lot of help from volunteers and the NTS Mountain Path Team.

The Gapers. Here are five Raven chicks in the nest. This pair of Ravens reared four chicks for the previous 3 years running. Marvelous. This was taken with a zoom and a steady hand. Ten days ago it was just a bunch of fluffy down and now soon these majestic birds will be Cronking in the skies effortlessly. Awesome

Skylarking around at 400m Alt on the Ptarmigan slopes of Ben Lomond. A few Sessile Oaks being planted, it would take them centuries to get this far, so look out for them in a few years as your passing by. Big thanks to Alice, Euan and David for their help, banter, wisdom and stories. All the best for the future guys, i'm off to pastures new.....

Here is the inside of the nest box, with the partially built nest. But it isnt a Blue Tit family being reared this year, it's a Tree Bumblebee, and she has her eggs and brood under the moss, exciting stuff. As the name suggests, its a Bumblebee that nests in trees, but sometimes chooses nest boxes instead. Magic

Howday peeps

Anyone fancy a wee day tree planting up on the slopes of Ben Lomond?
You need to be fit as we shall be hiking to 400m altitude.
Also you need to join via the National Trust for Scotland website, the volunteering section.
Once you have done that then give me a wee whatsapp or txt to 07384364925, please don't phone as i shall be in Germany for two weeks with no reception for calls, and no access to the volunteer portal.
Lets go...

Ah a braw day on the Ben. What started off as a wee hike to search for Ptarmigan, the white grouse like bird in one of the pictures, turned into an epic Artic adventure with Crampons and Axe. Helped guide 4 people off the Ptarmigan Ridge route on two separate occasions due to it being only ice underfoot and no one had crampons or axes. Everyone down safely and hopefully investing in a pair of the above mentioned needed equipment. Have fun out there guys but know your limits. Some smashing high pressure coming in the next few days...enjoy.
