Wentworth Woodhouse is a Grade 1 listed country house in the village of Wentworth, South Yorkshire. 🕰️ It's Step Back in Time Sunday and today we're exploring a room that you may recognise from our irresistible, seasonal Afternoon Teas - it's the Long Gallery! 🕰️

🛋️ Thought to be part of the 17th century house, this room has always been part of the private living apartments. It was altered by Henry Flitcroft in 1743, and again by John Carr is 1760🏛️ Carr divided the room by inserting columns.

After the division of the House in 1949, this room was used as a private drawing room by successive families - and now, we get to welcome you, our lovely visitors, to relax and indulge in gorgeously prepared Afternoon Teas 🍰

📜 There's just under 3 months to go until the first ever Wentworth Woodhouse History Festival so we're shining a spotlight on some of the wonderful workshops on offer on the day! Here's the line up:

🍽️ Tastes Through Time
Through immersive displays and captivating talks, Tastes Through Time bring history alive! In their displays, you'll meet Countess Maude Fitzwilliam to explore the responsibilities of managing a large country house, and Katherine Moffat, nanny to the children of the household.

🌿Natural Dyes and Tote Bags with Charlie Hill
Artist and creative outdoor facilitator, Charlie, will be exploring ways to connect to nature and each other through community, creativity, and bushcraft.

💃Dance the Past
Step back in time and discover the social dances of the Regency period in this introductory one-hour workshop. Drawing on surviving dance manuals, you'll learn a selection of simple dances enjoyed in the ballrooms of Jane Austen's day while exploring the role of dance in the social life of the era. No previous dance experience is required and no partner is needed - just bring your enthusiasm and your dancing feet!

On behalf of everyone at Wentworth Woodhouse, I would like to offer our sincere apologies to all visitors who experienced difficulties travelling to and from Wentworth Woodhouse and Wentworth village yesterday.

For every major event held at Wentworth Woodhouse, we require organisers to demonstrate that they have met all traffic management requirements and capacities set out by the Local Authority Safety Advisory Group. Regrettably, on this occasion, the event organiser failed to deliver the agreed traffic management arrangements in accordance with their contractual obligations. This fell well below the standards we expect and, for that, we are truly sorry.

We recognise the frustration and inconvenience this caused to our visitors, local residents and the wider community. I want to assure everyone that we will not be working with this organiser again.

Ultimately, responsibility for the safety, enjoyment and overall experience of our visitors rests with me. We have carefully reviewed what happened, identified the lessons to be learned, and are already implementing measures to ensure a situation like this cannot be repeated.

For future events, traffic management will be overseen directly by the Wentworth Woodhouse team or by our appointed contractors, who have extensive knowledge of the site and its operational requirements.

Once again, I apologise to everyone affected. We greatly value the support of our visitors and local community, and we look forward to welcoming you to Wentworth Woodhouse again during our summer events programme.
