Modern slavery in the UK is rising.

A new report from the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner has revealed that 23,411 potential victims of modern slavery were referred into the UK’s National Referral Mechanism in 2025.

That is the highest number recorded since the NRM began, and a 22% increase in just one year.

The report also highlights that UK nationals now make up the highest proportion of modern slavery victims, reminding us that trafficking is not something that only happens far away. It is happening in our own communities too.

Modern slavery is expanding, adapting and becoming harder to spot. The question is whether we are willing to keep paying attention.

We are pleased to share that One By One has helped establish the first Child Protection Committee in Mafubira sub-county, Jinja, Uganda.

In rural Uganda, children can face serious risks of abuse, neglect and exploitation, often made worse by poverty, cultural pressures and limited access to formal justice systems.

The new committee is made up of 11 democratically elected local members who have been trained by One By One in child protection, case identification, case management and referral processes, including how to recognise and respond to trafficking and exploitation.

The committee will meet every month to discuss documented cases, support local safeguarding responses, refer serious concerns to law enforcement where needed, and lead community education sessions.

One By One will continue to provide monthly follow-up support, but the long-term goal is to strengthen protection from within the community itself.

This is an important step in helping children stay safer, better protected and less vulnerable to exploitation.

Across the world, girls are still missing school simply because they don’t have what they need for their period.

At first it’s a day here or there, but slowly the gap widens. She falls behind. She loses confidence. She starts to feel like the classroom isn’t a place for her anymore. And that’s exactly when traffickers notice.

The Dignity Project steps in before that moment. A Dignity Bag gives her what she needs to stay in school, but it also gives her the sense that she is seen, valued and worth protecting.

When traffickers believe vulnerable children will go unseen, unsupported, or unheard, abuse is able to continue. That is why awareness is only the beginning.

One By One works across prevention, rescue, and restoration. We educate communities, support children rescued from exploitation, provide safe places of care, and work alongside local authorities when protection and justice are needed.

Stopping trafficking means more than identifying the problem. It means building systems of safety around those most at risk. Learn More - www.onebyone.org

Our founder Becky Murray spends a lot of time in churches, not just because Christians care about the world, because the issue is closer than many people realise.

Trafficking doesn’t always look dramatic or obvious, and it doesn’t just happen in distant parts of the world. When Becky speaks, she brings years of frontline experience into the room. She helps people recognise what grooming actually looks like, how traffickers operate, and why vulnerable children are often targeted long before anyone realises they’re at risk. Churches have a vital role to play in protecting the vulnerable. Understanding the signs is the first step.

If you would like to book Becky to speak at your church or event, comment below or send us a DM and we will send you the booking link.

Harry* is 9 years old and was admitted to King’s Kenya last year.

His mother works hard to provide, but ongoing health challenges made it difficult to support his education long-term.

Today, Harry is in school and receiving the support he needs to continue learning and growing. Swipe to read his story.

One year ago, the Mercy Centre opened its doors to girls rescued from trafficking and exploitation.

Since then, it has become a place of safety, healing, friendship, learning, and hope.

This past year, we have seen girls begin to smile again, return to education, build trusted relationships, and start looking towards the future with confidence.

Thank you to everyone who has prayed for, supported, and stood alongside the Mercy Centre over the last year. Your support is helping make restoration possible every single day.

Nearly 200 children come to King’s in Kenya each day for education, care, and stability.

It is a place of safety in a community where children can often face hunger, exploitation, neglect, and extreme poverty. Alongside education, children receive daily meals, consistent support, and the opportunity to grow in an environment where they are known, protected, and encouraged to thrive.

Over the years, we have also worked to reintegrate many children back into family-centred care while continuing to support their education through to the end of secondary school.

A new nation for One By One!

We have now reached our 15th country, with work now taking place in Nepal. The Dignity Project was delivered for the first time, as girls gathered to learn how to stay safe, remain in school, and understand their value.

Our work looks different in every nation. But the purpose is the same. To protect the vulnerable and prevent exploitation before it begins. It's wonderful to witness the impact growing across nations.
