A shop has been ordered to close for three months for a second time in less than a year after we successfully secured a closure order for the sale of illegal to***co.

Popard Mini Market of 46 Barnsley Road in Goldthorpe was ordered to close for three months from Thursday 18 June at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court. The Court also ordered the leaseholder Hema Homes Limited to pay costs of £3,414.

The premises had previously been closed from August 2025 to November 2025 by a Court Order in relation to the sale of illegal to***co, illegal vapes, illegal food and sale of vapes to children.

However, the criminality did not stop when the shop re-opened with evidence and intelligence gathered about the continued sale of illegal to***co and the employment of an illegal worker to transport the products to the premises.

Other offences included operating a business without notifying the relevant Rating Department and operating a food business without registering with the relevant Food Authority.

Our Archives and Local Studies service is holding a free Pop-up Archives session in Goldthorpe to help people with family and local history inquiries and research.

Join us at Goldthorpe Library between 10am and 1pm on Monday 20 July.

There will be a range of digital resources to view, including the Barnsley Chronicle from 1858-2023, as well as indexes to cemetery burials and building plans.

You can get expert guidance on using the Ancestry, Find My Past and British Newspaper Archive websites and arrange to view documents at Barnsley Town Hall.

Our experienced staff will be visiting other locations around the borough over the coming months.

We’re looking for a motivated and community-minded Volunteer Centre Manager to work alongside Ian in helping run and develop our thriving community centre.

The Role:

✅ Manage bookings for community groups, organisations, and businesses
✅ Support the day-to-day running of the centre
✅ Help maintain the building, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and presentation
✅ Assist with health and safety responsibilities
✅ Promote the centre within the local community
✅ Encourage new groups and activities to make the centre a vibrant community hub
✅ Work with volunteers, users, and stakeholders to maximise the centre’s potential

We’re Looking For Someone Who:

✔ Has good organisational and communication skills
✔ Is friendly, approachable, and community-focused
✔ Can work independently and as part of a team
✔ Has an interest in supporting local people and organisations
✔ Wants to make a positive difference in the community

Shoutout to Ashton Powney from Bolton upon Dearne, who recently won the Special Achievement Award at Barnsley’s Young Champions Awards. 🎉

The talented young goalkeeper has enjoyed a remarkable year, earning a call-up to represent the England Under-18s and making history as the first player from South Yorkshire Schools to receive an England call-up. Even more impressively, Ashton is the first player from South Yorkshire to earn an England call-up in 41 years.

Adding to an incredible list of achievements, Ashton has now proudly collected his England cap – a well-deserved reward for his hard work, dedication and outstanding performances between the posts.
