❗It’s time to talk about all the misinformation being spread about hospice care as part of the assisted dying debate – including this post.

Let us be clear. Assisted dying is still not legal in the UK and it is not available at hospices. ❌

Hospices provide people with palliative and end of life care.

πŸ‘‰ Palliative care is physical, emotional and practical support that can be accessed at any time after you’re diagnosed. It’s about providing treatment that makes you feel supported and comfortable through your illness, rather than a cure. This can include painkillers and medications, physiotherapy, art therapy, counselling, specialist nutrition, help with finances and admin, and much more.

πŸ‘‰ End of life care is similar but not the same. It usually starts to be offered to people in the last year of their life. The aim of end of life care is to help someone be as comfortable as possible in the time they have left, as well as making sure that practical things such as Wills or wishes are sorted out.

We have a neutral position on assisted dying. We’re not for or against it. But we are against misinformation about end of life care.

We know the ongoing conversation around assisted dying can be a difficult and emotional topic, especially if you’re living with a terminal illness or caring for someone with one.

If you need support or would like more information, we’re here for you. Call us on 0800 090 2309 or visit the link in our bio πŸ’›

At the weekend, our volunteers were fundraising in Asda Rotherham.

Thanks to all those who helped out with the collections, the very generous customers who donated and of course, Asda for letting us be in store.

Over 2 days, we managed to raise an amazing £414 🀩

If you would like more information about our group and what we get up to, please contact Sue on 07944 654177.

We are always looking for new volunteers! πŸ’› xx

Our volunteers are once again in local Morrisons stores, raising awareness of the end of life care that Marie Curie nurses give to people and how Marie Curie supports the families involved.

For the next couple of weeks, there's all sorts of fund raising events happening in Morrisons, so if you see our volunteers, please stop and say hello and donate if you can.

Thanks to the community champions at Bramley, Catcliffe and Parkgate for all their hard work and help.

And if anyone is interested in joining our group, please give Sue a ring on 07944 654177 or contact Cathy on 07816 612860 πŸ’› xx

It is with great sadness that we report on the passing of one of our volunteer collectors.

Dawn was a lovely lass who had supported Marie Curie in Rotherham since 2018.

She was a very kind, friendly and caring lady; a gentle person who was always positive and willing to help anyone.

Whereas most of our collectors work on 2 hour shifts, Dawn was our 'super collector' as she always volunteered for 4 hours.

In the last 7 years since she joined us, Dawn had collected over Β£6500 for our funds. An incredible amount of money.

Dawn's funeral will be held on Tuesday 26th August at 10am, at St. Mary's Church on Herringthorpe Valley Road.

Dawn had requested that everyone attending wears bright coloured clothes.

Dawn was a very special lady and will be sadly missed by us all. πŸ’›

This year is the 15th anniversary of Marie Curie Rotherham Fundraising Group.

The Stag Public House on Wickersley Road has kindly offered to host our anniversary celebrations and raffle.

Huge thanks go to Alana and staff at The Stag for supporting us.

The raffle will be drawn on 31st August.

Any local business who would like to donate a prize can get in touch with Sue on 07944 654177 or Cathy on 07816 612860

Since our group was formed in August 2010, we have raised over Β£175,000 which is a wonderful achievement for such a small group and equates to approx 8,800 hours of nursing care.

We're looking forward to giving you an updated total on 31st August!

So please get in touch with donations or to buy tickets.

We cannot do this without you! πŸ’› πŸ₯³ 1️⃣5️⃣
