With temperatures set to rise, the UK Health Security Agency has issued a Yellow Heat-Health alert for our region from 3pm on 17 June 2026 to 8pm on 22 June 2026.

Stay safe with these top tips from the NHS:

๐Ÿ‘‹ Keep a close eye on older people, young children, and people with long term health conditions โ€“ their bodies can struggle to cope with the heat.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm and plan ahead to avoid being out in the heat.

๐ŸงดWear sunscreen, a hat, and light clothes, and avoid strenuous exercise or activity that makes you hotter.

๐Ÿšฐ Cool yourself down. Have cold food and drinks, avoid alcohol and caffeine.

๐ŸกKeep your living space cool. Close windows during the day and open them at night โ€“ if it safe to do so.

A really positive announcement from Hampshire County Council this week.

A new dedicated route has opened into the **Connect to Work** programme for people with social care needs โ€” helping more residents move into, and stay in, meaningful employment.

This new pathway is aimed at people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health needs, including those already supported by local authorities or voluntary and community organisations.

Connect to Work is a fully funded national programme supporting disabled people, people with health conditions, and those facing complex barriers to employment. Hampshire County Council has secured **ยฃ18.7 million of national funding** to help thousands of people across the county into work, while also helping local employers address skills gaps.

The programme offers:

โœ… Personalised one-to-one support
โœ… Up to 12 months of tailored help
โœ… Support for both employees and employers once someone is in work
โœ… Help to secure sustainable, long-term employment

This specialist social care element is being delivered in partnership with **Shaw Trust**, a leading employment charity.

This is exactly the sort of practical support that can make a real difference โ€” helping people build confidence, develop skills and take the next step towards greater independence.

It is also an opportunity for employers across Hampshire to get involved, offer inclusive opportunities and benefit from a more diverse and skilled workforce.

To be eligible, residents need to be over 18, have the right to live and work in England and Wales, and want to secure employment.

More information and registration of interest is available here:

Does your child or young person have a health passport? ๐Ÿ“‹

A health passport is a document that helps healthcare professionals understand your child better. It can include information about:

๐Ÿ’šHow they communicate
๐Ÿ’šWhat helps them feel safe
๐Ÿ’š Sensory needs and triggers
๐Ÿ’š Medical conditions and medications
๐Ÿ’š Things they may find difficult
๐Ÿ’š How they express pain or distress

For many families, a health passport can also reduce the need to repeatedly explain their child's needs to different healthcare professionals. Instead of having the same conversations over and over again, important information is available in one place for staff to refer to.

Sharing a health passport before a hospital appointment, admission or emergency visit can help staff provide more personalised care and reduce stress for both your child and your family.

Many NHS trusts provide their own templates, often called a health passport, hospital passport, learning disability passport or communication passport.

If your child/young person doesn't already have one, try searching your local NHS trust's website or asking your GP surgery, learning disability nursing team, paediatrician or hospital for a template.

๐Ÿ’ก Keep a digital copy on your phone so it's always available if you need unexpected medical care.

Has a health passport helped your family? We'd love to hear your experiences in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡

More than 173,000 people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have already received their spring COVID-19 vaccination this year. By protecting those most at risk from serious illness, our vaccination programme is helping people stay healthy and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions โ€” a key part of the 10 Year Health Plan's focus on prevention.

Those eligible are people aged 75 and over, care home residents, and those who have an increased risk of getting seriously ill due to having a weakened immune system. Local GP and our Clinical Director, Dr Charlotte Hutchings, said: โ€œThank you to those of you who have come forward to have their spring COVID-19 vaccination. Our campaign continues until June 30, and the last date to book into a slot is June 29, so there is still some time yet to have your vaccination if you are eligible.

โ€œIt does take about one-to-two weeks for the COVID-19 vaccination to become active, so the sooner you get it the better. The vaccine provides protection that lasts for some months, so we recommend people take up the offer of seasonal boosters to improve their immunity.โ€

Anyone unsure whether they are eligible for a vaccination, or who needs support with booking an appointment, can contact the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight COVID Vaccination Helpline on 0300 561 0018, Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Further information about COVID-19 vaccinations, including eligibility criteria and booking options, is available through the NHS website and NHS App.

The success of programmes like vaccination shows the difference that proactive, community-based healthcare can make. As we continue to develop neighbourhood health services and deliver the ambitions of the 10 Year Health Plan, we want to hear your views on what would make the biggest difference in your local area. You can find the link to our survey in the comments.
