Romsey’s New Mayor for 2026/27.
At Romsey Town Council’s Mayor Making ceremony held on Tuesday 5th May 2026 at Romsey Town Hall, newly elected Mayor, Cllr Colin Burgess, said it was both an honour and a privilege to serve as Romsey’s Mayor and Ambassador.
In his inaugural speech, Cllr Burgess paid tribute to council officers and staff for their dedication during what has been a particularly challenging year, describing them as “the engine room of this council.” He praised their professionalism, commitment and talent, adding “We are truly fortunate to have such talent.” He also wished our recently retired Bookings Manager a long and happy retirement, and extended his best wishes to her successor.
Looking ahead, Cllr Burgess pledged his support for the Chief Officer and Buildings and Environment Manager as they continue delivering initiatives for councillors, staff and the wider community. He said “Our ambition is clear; to be recognised as a model council, even in the face of Local Government Reorganisation and continued development pressures. Romsey Town Council is ready for those challenges.”
The mayoral theme for the year is compassion. At a time when the news can often feel overwhelmingly negative, Cllr Burgess wants to shine a light on the unsung heroes in our community, those who quietly make a difference every day through kindness, care and compassion.
His chosen charities reflect that theme perfectly; Freedom Church, Romsey Family Support Group, Baby Necessities, and Youth in Romsey. Together, they support families, individuals and young people facing hardship, helping to strengthen wellbeing and build brighter futures despite ongoing funding challenges.
To raise money for these important causes, the Mayor's main fundraiser will be a tandem skydive later this summer — joined, entirely voluntarily, by our Civic Administrator! And if you feel equally adventurous… you’re very welcome to join them!
Finally, Cllr Burgess announced that Reverend Mike Perrott of the Abbey United Reformed Church, Romsey will serve as his Chaplain for the coming year.
We are sure you will join us in wishing Mayor Cllr Colin Burgess a wonderful and successful year in office. 👏
