REMAP - changing the lives of individuals experiencing disability, one person at time!

Michael reached out to REMAP as his daughter, Beth, had newly received an all-terrain wheelchair which she couldn’t safely use because her hands kept touching the tyres.

They were paired with engineer John from our Bury, Bolton and Rochdale branch, who visited the family and devised a solution. ⚙️

Michael says: “John came up with a great adaptation to our daughter’s wheelchair that has allowed her to use it without getting her hands trapped in the wheels.”

Here’s Beth using her adapted all-terrain wheelchair on a happy day out. 🌟

👉 Could you or someone you know benefit from something similar? Let us know how we can help: https://remap.org.uk/how-we-can-help/

📷 Image Description: A collage of two photos showing Beth by a pond in her wheelchair with adapted wide arms that protect her hands from the tyres. In the first photo, Beth is smiling at the camera and, in the second, she is looking at the water.

You may have seen me share posts about Essex South REMAP before. Here’s a little about my involvement with this fantastic charity.

🌟Volunteer Spotlight 🌟

Hi I’m Shelley! I started volunteering with REMAP in January 2020. When I joined, the Essex South branch was dormant, and my first task was to bring it back to life. Despite the challenges of COVID, it was an exciting journey, and I’m proud to say the group has been running successfully for several years now. I love the ongoing challenge of managing the operation and the chance to work with an incredible team of volunteers.

What makes it even more rewarding is the direct connection with the clients we help. Volunteering with REMAP is truly special. There are so many memorable stories, but one that stands out is about a lady who used to run a knitting circle before COVID. Unfortunately, after the lockdowns, she had a stroke and could no longer knit. Her daughter reached out to REMAP, and we created a device that held one needle in place, allowing her to knit with just one hand. With some practice, she was back knitting and rejoined her social circle. The device we made didn’t just help her knit again – it gave her back a piece of her life.

I wish more people with disabilities knew about REMAP. We design and create custom equipment or adapt existing items to fit individuals needs. It’s sad to think we could help more people, but many don’t know we exist.

Please spread the word and let’s help more people regain independence and joy in their lives. Get our help here -

REMAP - changing the lives of individuals experiencing disability, one person at time!

💡 Our client, Paul, had a severe stroke two years ago. Before his stroke, Paul's greatest passion was fishing, which he hadn't been able to do since.

After looking for accessible fishing equipment for over a year, Paul’s Stroke Recovery Coordinator had found nothing suitable in the UK, so she reached out to REMAP.

Paul was paired with Engineer Frank Kennedy who was able to design and make a bespoke solution for Paul. After two years of not being able to enjoy his passion, he can now go fishing again! 🎣

👉 Would custom equipment help you reconnect with a sport or hobby? Get in touch: https://remap.org.uk/how-we-can-help/

If the Paralympics are motivating you to get involved with sport, but you’re struggling with accessibility barriers, REMAP adapt and make equipment to suit individual need. 🥇

We created this solution for a young client called Luke, a quadruple amputee with a strong passion for sports. He came to REMAP via his Occupational Therapist, with a request to see if we could engineer a prosthetic for his right arm that would enable him to hold and play with a table tennis bat. This would allow him to not only play one of his favourite sports but also strengthen his arm. 🏓

Luke’s Dad said: “With the help of REMAP, Luke has been able to join his friends and can once again enjoy PE at school. A huge boost to his confidence!”.

REMAP - changing the lives of individuals experiencing disability, one person at time!

We’re loving the Boccia at the Paralympics and wish good luck to Stephen McGuire as he goes for gold this afternoon. 👏

Boccia is a brilliant sport that we’ve supported multiple disabled people to play by providing them with custom solutions, including ball holders, measuring devices, head pointers and ramps.

👉 If custom equipment could help you with a sport or hobby, please get in touch: https://remap.org.uk/how-we-can-help/
