The Salik Project UK

The Salik Project UK The Salik Project UK supports people in recovery from addiction and their families. We are NOT a treatment centre.

Our mission is to educate communities, raise awareness, challenge stigma, and as a cultural bridge to mainstream support services. We’re a small, community-interest, non-profit organisation based in Rochdale, working to raise awareness of addiction and promote recovery. Our mission is to support South Asian communities by increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and providing education that encourages early intervention and timely support.

Some absolutely brilliant and well-researched entries are coming through as part of our poster competition with Rochdale Science Initiative C.I.C , Action Together and Sunshine Snacks.

We're often led to believe that substance misuse is an issue buried beneath stigma and shame, but for us, it is young people — our future — who can help change the tide within South Asian communities.

Research consistently shows that delaying or preventing substance use during adolescence reduces the risk of developing substance use disorders and related harms later in life. This is true regardless of background, which is why prevention and open conversations matter so much.

As a community, we must rise collectively to this challenge and stop waiting for someone else to "save us." We are more than capable. We have the talent, the compassion, and the courage to face this issue head-on and spare countless families from pain and heartbreak.

Let's begin by normalising conversations around addiction instead of stigmatising those affected by it. Real change starts when we replace silence with understanding and judgement with compassion.

Rochdale can lead the way!

Many thanks to Rochdale Islamic Academy for Boys (RIAB) for inviting High Level Northern Trust's Community Engagement officer to speak with their students about addiction, substance misuse, and recovery.

Waffa shared his own experiences of addiction and recovery, and the students had the opportunity to ask questions and have open and honest conversations. It was a lively and engaging session, and we were encouraged by the interest and participation from the young people.

A big thank you to everyone at RIAB for their warm hospitality and welcome. JazakAllah khair. We hope to visit again soon, insha'Allah.

This is exactly what we want to see more of – bringing these conversations into our schools, mosques, and community spaces, helping to raise awareness and challenge stigma.

If you would like us to visit your mosque, school, or community centre to deliver a similar session, please get in touch. Together, we can help create healthier and better-informed communities.
