The Craft session this month was extended to not only provide tea and cake but also lunch and a choice of six crafts.
Thanks to Lyn for organising and other members who led the individual groups. There was something for everyone to try their hand at be it sewing, block stamping, card making, silk painting, producing wonderful flowers from pipe cleaners or decorative miniature easels.
Plenty of choice for lunch and cake at teatime. A great big 'thank you' to the catering team who once again did not disappoint.

What better way to spend an afternoon than with your WI friends in a nice cool hall!

The President welcomed members to the July meeting and after the singing of Jerusalem Sonia introduced our speaker for the evening - Kirsty Bentham.
Kirsty is the founder of the Derbyshire Allergy Network which provides support and advocacy for people living with allergies and their families and actively works to increase awareness and understanding.
Kirsty began by explaining what an allergy is and that around 1 in 3 people in the UK now live with an allergic condition. She then went on to explain that, after her own experiences and difficulties encountered with getting a diagnosis and ongoing treatment for her young daughter, she realised the need for more help and information to be more readily accessable. She explained the careful planning that is needed to make sure her daughter can join in social activities and be safe and is not disadvantaged in anyway. Communication is key.
Many members had their own experiences around various allergies which they were happy to share and discuss. A very informative and interesting talk and we wish Kirsty every success with this project.
Following the business we had a game of 'truth or lie' as a means of getting to know you!
Divided into table of six once sorted into alphabetically order on surnames there was lots of hilarity as we discovered who could spin the best tale be it the truth or a lie!
Winner of the monthly competition 'a photograph of the seaside' was Margaret Webster.
The entry into the Craft Cooperative class in the recent Derbyshire Show were on display and all the members involved were on hand to explain the thinking behind the entry and the marking system!
Later in the month the Committee held a coffee morning in Harrison's Cottage for new members giving them the opportunity to get to know each other as well as the Committee and ask any questions

Our entry in the Craft Co-operative at the County Show last Sunday was awarded 2nd place. South Normanton WI came first by half a mark, so we feel very proud of our achievement.

Today Sue K is making an additional trip to Royal Derby Maternity department with 65 pairs of bonding squares as apparently the feeding team are very short.
Many thanks to everyone who is knitting these vital squares for the unit, and a big thank-you to Oakwood WI for joining in with our efforts. They are all greatly appreciated. 🧶

After a warm welcome, by the President Sonia, to all members, some with us for their first meeting, and the business of the month completed, our speaker for this June meeting Glenda Youde, introduced us to Frogmore House and Gardens. This is a 17th century country House, seeped in history and owned by the Crown Estate and still used today by the Royal Family. The accompanying slides of the picturesque gardens along with the history of the royal occupants over the centuries proved to be a very interesting and informative talk. Glenda was thanked by Kathleen G.
The competition-' A photograph of your garden' judged by the speaker was won by Dorothy W.
Our Social and Craft afternoon this month proved once again what talented members we have. Assisted by Suzanne and Sonia it was time to take up the paint brushes....
Dorothy introduced us to kumihimo, the knitters knitted and chattered and all enjoyed the amazing array of cakes and scones produced by our wonderful Catering Team. What better way to spend an afternoon.

Our first outing of 2026 coincided with the first day of the present heat wave.
Members and friends enjoyed this visit to Doddington Hall. This Elizabethan Manor has been with the same family for over 400 years. Within the house were some very old and magnificent wall hanging tapestries.
Six acres of gardens - kitchen, walled and wild, to have a leisurely stroll round or sit awhile and admire the great range of plants and foliage.
Thank you Suzanne for arranging this day out and to Colin, our favourite driver from Harpur's Coaches.

Our May meeting was not only the Annual Meeting but we also celebrated our 85th birthday. 🎂🍾🥳🥂
We welcomed Sonia as our new President, celebrated with cake and prosecco, and Sonia interviewed NFWI Vice Chair and past DFWI Chair, Chrissie Booth, about her WI journey so far.

Sue made another huge delivery to the Royal Derby Baby Unit last week.
No less than 34 blankets, 70 cardigans, 177 hats, 18 teddies and 4 mini teddies, 83 bonding pairs, a selection of bootees and mittens and 12 drawstring bags filled with essential toiletries.
A great big thank you to all the knitters and crocheters involved. .
