Stationary Power House - Midland Railway Butterley

Stationary Power House - Midland Railway Butterley The Stationary Power Museum houses a large collection of industrial and agricultural engines. We are staffed purely on a voluntary basis .

When you would like to visit us park at Butterley Station and get the train at Butterley Station to Swanwick Junction where a short walk will lead you to The Stationary Power Building. We run engines every weekend throughout the summer and on special occasions or by request. Organised parties are welcome and we can have several engines running for group occasions. We are free admission if you come by train from Butterley and donations are welcome.

We have two Hamworthy high pressure compressors for starting engines at around 300 psi , The latest addition acquired by Mick and Mark Adams is a two stroke petrol engine direct coupled to a compressor capable of 400 psi, This will supplement the existing start compressor sets and be a fairy unique exhibit in its own right.

For a couple of weeks Mick, Edmund and Norman have been working on the small Blackstone Engine that has been with us for many years, and today it ran for a short time after Mick and Norman sorted out the Spring Injection system. Ed fabricated the exhaust system and has been busy perfecting the art of making starting papers.
It's a fully enclosed horizontal Diesel engine and were made in batches for use in Aveling road rollers and stationary applications.

Some 35 Years ago a group of Stationary Engine Enthusiasts decided to create a place for their Collection at The Midland Railway Trust, Some of the group even had hair then.
Permissions and Planning were sought and so started several decades of hard work.
We hope the results speak for themselves.

Here is Norman and Winston standing next to a Blackstone OHS 1 Diesel engine, there are a number of these ugly looking engines around, Blackstone also made a JHS 1 type too. some were used in Road rollers such as Aveling Barford machines because of their compact design and fully enclosed crankcase.
Norman is starting to restore the engine after it has spent some years with us, It apparently ran some twenty five years ago so it's time it was awakened from its slumber. We located it next to its bigger twin cylinder cousin .
