We are The Bridge Community - your local Food Bank and Food Club.
We are in the town centre and work out of the Sussex Street Christian Centre opposite Wetherspoons.
Food Bank - done by referrals from your support network when your in a food crisis - so speak to your support worker, health visitor, Doctor etc
Food Club - sometimes in other areas called food pantries.
These are for ANYONE and EVERYONE. We don’t need to know your income, your benefits or how big or small your house is, whether you are young or old. Food Club is a membership and open to EVERYONE.
We have many members, some we see regularly and others occasionally.
You are always made welcome.
Membership is £5 per year - and it’s easy to join, just wander in and see the person on the door on a Tuesday morning or a Thursday morning or a Wednesday evening. Times to follow. Your name and contact number is all we need.
Once you are a member you can then shop in our fabulous shop stocked with your essentials, some treats and just the best fruit and veg.
This will cost you £5 each time you shop. You can shop 2 x a week. £5 each visit. You get 10 items for £5 and we will help you on your first visit but pop in if you’re passing and ask one of our lovely volunteers to show you around, so you know if it’s for you.
Opening times: Tuesday and Thursday doors open at 10.30am and shop at 11am, Wednesday evening is 5.30pm until 7.30pm.
We are not just a food bank or a food club - We are The Bridge Community.
So, we hold a community cafe on Tuesday and Thursday and we always have FREE tea and coffee whilst you wait to shop - so, pay your £5 take your number and have a cuppa and a chat whilst you wait.
We have many visitors who just pop in for a cuppa and a meet up with their friends, not just to shop. Whilst our hot drinks are free, we are happy to take donations to cover the cost, but only if you can afford it and you won’t be asked.
Tuesday : we always have a snack for £1, available from 10.30 till food runs out.
Sometimes it’s just a bacon bap, sometimes a bowl of home made soup and for instance, this week, we had pulled lamb rolls served with potato salad all home made by ourselves ( we have food safety certificates)
Lamb kindly donated by a local farm.
Thursday : we have donations from Greggs and this is all FREE so you can sit and have a cuppa, a pasty or sausage roll and a donut, if we have them. We can’t allow you to take this away but we will be happy to see you sitting having a chat and a snack.
Do you have a benefit problem and don’t know how to get the answers
Do you know about Social tariffs for some utilities
Are you getting the right benefits
New to the area and just want to find somewhere welcoming
Chat to our volunteers, we can give you advice on where to go, who to speak to and if we don’t know an answer, we will find out for you.
So, if you have passed the Centre and seen the scaffolding, it’s now come down, we are open on the days mentioned and you will be made welcome, you may make some new friends, you will definitely save money by joining the Food Club. The kettle is always on and our volunteers are always ready to chat and show you what goes on here.
Don’t be shy, everyone and I mean everyone is welcome and we are happy to serve our community. Looking forward to seeing you now you know who we are and what we do.
Thanks
