Inchinnan Historical Interest Group

Inchinnan Historical Interest Group Meetings - 7.30pm in Inchinnan Parish Church hall. We have nine meetings, on varied subjects over the year and also hold outings to places of interest.

Inchinnan Historical Interest Group's objective is to advance the education of the public in the history, culture and heritage of Inchinnan and its surrounding area. The group has been fortunate in receiving funding grants from a number of charitable bodies inclusive of the HLF allowing us to purchase recording and display equipment to carry out our projects. In 2014 we successfully completed our

first major project "Inchinnan Farmlands to Erskine New Town" which can be viewed on YouTube and historypin.org. Other minor projects such as Inchinnan's First World War memorial have also been completed. Our most recent major project was our archaeological at All Hallows. We worked with the archaeologist Dr Heather James. For more information contact Inchinnan Historical Interest Group. A warm welcome is extended to everybody with an interest in local history and meeting with like minded people.

We’re delighted to share that the Community Asset Transfer of another important local green space has now been successfully completed 💚

Previously earmarked for housing development, this area of farmland adjoining the south of Teucheen Wood is now in community ownership - helping to protect it for future generations while creating new opportunities for nature, learning, and community wellbeing.

Plans for the site include restoring and creating valuable wildlife habitat, developing a fully accessible nature space, and supporting outdoor learning, community wellbeing, and conservation activities. We will also be exploring the site’s historic links to the Battle of Renfrew alongside Inchinnan Historical Interest Group. In the meantime, the site is being allowed to naturally regenerate, helping us understand which plant species emerge naturally and informing future habitat creation work.

Thank you to all those who showed their support!

Abandoned mud punts at Newshot Island on the Clyde, with the Clydebank Titan Crane in the background. They were once part of a fleet of hundreds of floating platforms which were used to move mud dredged from the bottom of the Clyde in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This was a continuous and essential process aimed at preventing the Clyde from silting up and becoming unnavigable to the large ships on which Glasgow's economy depended. When no longer needed, some of these punts, along with other vessels, were taken to this inlet off the Clyde near Erskine and left to decay on the muddy foreshore. This created a boat graveyard which can still be seen to this day.
