We've been at the The UK Careers Fair at The Alverton Hotel in Truro earlier today to speak with people across the county who are interested in volunteering and finding out more about what we do.

Volunteering is a fantastic way to learn new skills, meet a community of wonderful people and make a difference to a charity supporting bereaved children, young people and their families across Cornwall.

Some people might feel supporting families directly isn't for them and choose to become a volunteer with us at community and fundraising events, such as collecting cheques, helping with stalls or doing talks. Others might want to come on board as a family support volunteer. Volunteers are able to do as much or as little as they'd like but every single one of them helps us to make a difference.

Schools across Cornwall are now starting to reopen after a long, sunny summer holidays. Going back to school or moving from primary to secondary school can be challenging for children and young people who have been bereaved.

Here is some helpful advice from Jeremiah's Journey, a charity supporting bereaved children and young people in Plymouth and an organisation we connect with in the South West Children and Families Bereavement Alliance – Together For Grief.

GOING BACK TO SCHOOL AFTER SOMEONE SPECIAL DIES 💙

The return to school after the death of someone important can feel really difficult for a child or young person.

They are not only coping with their grief and emotions, but often facing significant changes to their routines after the summer holidays. Even when they seem ready, they may be worried about questions from friends, managing their emotions, or simply getting through the school day.

If you are a parent or carer of a child or young person, a little preparation can make a big difference. You may wish to consider some of these ideas:

💙 Talk to school early. Let key staff know what has happened and what support might be helpful.

💙 Involve the child or young person. They should have a say in how their return to school is handled and what feels right for them.

💙 Identify a trusted adult. Agree who they can go to if they feel overwhelmed, upset or simply need some time out.

💙 Plan for difficult moments. Think together about what they could say if someone asks about the person who died. They don't have to explain everything, and it's okay to say, “I don't really want to talk about it right now.”

💙 Keep communication open. Grief can change from day to day. What feels manageable one day might feel much harder the next.

💙 Remember that normality matters too. School can provide routine, friendships, laughter and a chance to simply be themselves. They don't have to stop enjoying things because they are grieving.

Perhaps most importantly, remember that there is no right or wrong way to grieve, and no set timetable.

Returning to school doesn't mean the grief has gone. It may, however, help a child or young person find a way to carry their grief while still feeling safe, supported and understood. 💙

Thank you to the Bolingey Barbarians for a fantastic day of fundraising, conversations, dancing and rugby! 🏉🧸

Penhaligon's Friends were invited along to their Charity Day this Bank Holiday Sunday and what a day! It was wet and windy but it certainly didn't dampen anyone's spirits... as you can see by our mascot Fudge dancing with Betty Stoggs in the drizzle!

Another huge thank you to the team at Bolingey for funding our new costume for Fudge, which was printed by Custom Print Cornwall in Penryn.

Thank you to everyone who popped by our stall, had a go at our teddy tombola, and came to meet the team. We couldn't do what we do without the support of incredible community events like these. 💜

Amazing! What an incredible amount raised to support charities across Cornwall, including Penhaligon's Friends.

What a fantastic charity day we had on Sunday, despite the pouring rain! 🌧️

A family from Helston are getting ready to complete an ambitious charity cycle from John o'Groats to Land's End. Their challenge starts on 5th September and we're cheering them on every step of the way from Cornwall!

They're supporting our charity, Penhaligons Friends, and the incredibly important Bowel Cancer West, two charities close to their hearts.

Today is National Grief Awareness Day. 🧸

The day aims to raise awareness of the many ways grief can show up in people's lives. Grief can be a complex experience that touches nearly everyone at some point, whether through the loss of a loved one or something else you valued.

We have resources which can help young people with their feelings and emotions, including a z-card as well as a video which simplifies the way young children might be feeling after a bereavement.
